Product Description

Color:Aqua Stripe

Merino Kids of New Zealand invented the merino baby sleep bag and is recognized with design awards and patents for its innovation.

Why Merino Kids is the world's best baby sleep bag:

  • Made from luxuriously soft Woolmark-certified Superfine Merino. Expertly stitched by master tailors in India.
  • GOTS-certified organic combed cotton outer layer gives extra durability for years of use. Machine washable.
  • Naturally fire-resistant. Rated low fire risk without fireproofing chemicals.
  • Fits growing child safely and comfortably for up to two years. Excellent value compared to other sleep bags that last only a few months.
  • Remarkable natural ability to regulate body temperature. Captures and circulates air to insulate child when the room temperature falls, and releases excess body heat and moisture as the room temperature rises. Child stays warm and dry without overheating.
  • Recommended by textile scientists. A 2010 scientific study concluded infants are less likely to overheat or to become damp and chilled in a Merino Kids sleep bag compared with polar fleece sleep bags.
  • Meets all U.S. and international safety standards including UK BSI sleep bag safety certification. Child has freedom to move and room to grow, yet can't slip underneath or wriggle out and wake uncovered and cold. Contoured bodice stays clear of face.
  • Awarded the prestigious global iF Seal of Outstanding Design Quality. Unzips from the bottom for quick diaper changes and opens flat for easy dressing. Zipper is sewn inside lining and enclosed in a special fabric zipper guard to protect child's skin. Opens at one shoulder only, won't 'pop open' when child stands.
  • Patented safety belt aperture enables child to wear their sleep bag in car seat and stroller. An essential innovation for busy parents, unique to Merino Kids.

Also available: toddler size 2-4 years, winter-weight for cooler rooms, and limited editions.

First of all if you are expecting the bags to be made out of merino wool and look like wool blanket, you will be disappointed. Both brands are rather thick outer cotton bag with thin (about as thick as cotton onsie) inner merino fabric layer. I have a feeling that merino wool is there more to regulate temperature, than to keep baby warm.

Since I couldn't decide between those 2 brands, here are the main differences I found:

- Shoulder snaps: Merino has the snaps only on one shoulder, Woolino on both.
- Armpit snaps: both Merino NB-2 and Woolino have one snap to make the armholes smaller, about half way through opening. Merino 2-4 doesn't have an armpit snap.
- Car seat buckle hole: Merino has them, Woolino doesn't.
- Snaps to make the sleeping bag shorter: only Woolino has them. One set of snaps on side of the bag which would make the bag short enough for a newborn or so.
- Cotton quality: Woolino was softer than Merino 2-4. The Merino 0-2 I have received was, however the softest of all 3. The cotton was organic, which the manufacturer didn't advertise and it wasn't the case of the bigger Merino bag.
- Made in: Woolino made in China. Merino 2-4 assembled in China. Merino 1-2 made in India. All made with Australian Merino Wool.
- Zipper: same quality and design in all 3.
- Size: Merino 0-2 and Woolino are very similar size, with lots of room to grow for my 7 month old (he is 27-28 inch long). Merino 2-4 was very long and since my baby is skinny, there was no way I could start using it that early - he would squeeze through the neck opening. Here is the Merino Kids Size chart:

Age.....Length......Chest Width at Binding.....Neck Opening.......1/2 arm Opening
0-2.....34 inch......11 inch...................5 inch.............

I have now owned four baby sleep sacks. Started out with the HALO, which seemed nice and soft (so bought the next size up), but it quickly turned out to be stuffy and hot because of their synthetic makeup; then moved on to cotton and finally have been more-or-less happy with a cotton-poly blend, which has kept my baby fairly snug and warm. My baby is now nine months old and I've been searching for a bigger (and more natural) sleep sack to take her through the next year. I couldn't decide between the Merino and Woolino (they seem pretty much identical!) but the Merino was on sale, so I thought I'd give it a go.

Unfortunately, shortly after it arrived in the mail, I've decided to return it, for the following reasons:

(1) the Merino 0-2 years size is fairly small, i.e., about as small as the current sleep sack that we're looking to replace (which no longer fits a nine month old). I acknowledge that at 30 inches my baby is fairly tall, but I can't see most two year olds fitting into this thing;

(2) the Merino has only one arm strap with snaps on it. This may not seem like a big deal to many parents, but for those who have a baby that's sometimes cranky around bed time, you'll know that putting on PJs or anything else over their heads or through their arms can bring on fits of crying and screaming. For this reason, we love our current sleep sack, which has snaps on both arm straps so that you can simply sandwich them between the layers and quickly zip and snap closed. If they're really hot or uncomfortable, or otherwise need a quick release from the sleep sack, you can simply undo the snaps and lift them out.

After returning the Merino, I've decided to do some additional research on the Woolino to make sure it would have what I was after.

Before purchasing the Merino Kids Baby Sleep Bag, I read all the reviews about sleep sacks. My daughter is a year old and was still waking up 3-4 times a night to nurse. I read all the sleep books by Pantley, Sears, Weissbluth, Ferber, etc... and had implemented strategies without much success. Call it coincidence (we're still knocking on wood), but she has gone to bed easily after nursing for about 10 minutes at night promptly at 8:10 every night since we've had the sleep sack. She falls right to sleep and her night waking is down to once or twice (and will go back to sleep much easier with just a back-rub), once at midnight and sometimes at 5:00, though she's forgotten that one a few times in the last week or two since we've had the sleep sack. My guess is that she was waking up cold. Now that we've taken care of the cold problem, a lot of the suggestions from books are working really well. Imagine that! My daughter loves her sleep sack; we call it the cozy cocoon. In the morning we have a nice unzipping the sleep sack game that she just adores where I unzip it little by little and peek at her toes and close it again and then at her knees, etc.. until it's all unzipped. If you're thinking about buying one for your wakey-wakey baby, just order it now. [...]. I certainly wish I had one earlier! If you're looking for the perfect gift for new parents, this is it! The funky new wool smell went away after the first washing. The only minor downside is that it's finished in China.

My grandson's merino kids sleep sack still fits him fine at 18 months old. Plenty of room to grow and all year use make it really good value. You don't need to buy sleep sacks for every size and season. My grandson is happy to wear his sleep sack because it is so roomy for his legs. He will sit happily in his sleep sack and watch TV or read books to wind down before bedtime. Highly recommend if you want a long lasting sleep sack.
