While searching for a place to purchase gillette fusion razor cartridges for less money I stumbled upon several forums devoted to double edge safety razors. Because I was spending nearly $15 for every pack of 4 replacement cartridges the thought of 100 double edge razor blades for the same price became very appealing. What's more most of these forums have indepth reviews of razors, and lengthy discussion about the advantages of shaving with a double edge safety razor. So after a great deal of research I decided to take the plunge and try using a safety razor. I chose the Merkur Futur for its adjustability and the many good reviews.

A few things to note about this razor and my experience as someone new to safety razors. First I have enjoyed the challenge of using a safety razor. The Futur feels very natural in the hand and has a good heft to it. But it does require a great deal of caution to avoid razor burn and cuts. I realize this has more to do with ones own ability and the type of blade used, however it is still influenced to some degree by the angle your razor holds the blade at and the weight of the razor. That said if you have read this far you are likely considering the switch to a safety razor and I think it important to evaluate how much time you can devote to shaving each day. For me to get a close shave and to avoid razor burn or cuts, multiple passes in a slow and cautious manner are necessary. While I like taking the time if it is available (I find it somewhat therapeutic) I am a law student and often stay up late doing homework and wake up early with little time to shave. Under these circumstances it is often difficult for me to find the time everyday to devote to a 15 or 20 minute shave. If you aren't on a time crunch and would like to save money this is a good option.

If you are looking for a specific razor I can say that I believe this razor to be exceptionally well made and one that will likely last forever. But in all honesty as I have only used this safety razor and have no other safety razor to compare it to, my review is subjective and limited as a result. However after using this razor for the last 8 months and with all of the previously mentioned considerations I can still say that I would purchase it again. My plan at this point is to purchase a panasonic ES 8103 electric razor, to use on the days I just don't have time for this and to continue using this razor to get a close shave and enjoy shaving on the days that I have the extra time necessary.

When I received this item I was disappointed with the workmanship so I sent a few emails to the seller and questioned if this is a real genuine Merkur product but I never had an answer. Seller can't be reached after the item is paid; won't respond to e-mail, questions or enquiries. I'll never buy from this seller ever again.

This is my second Merkur double edge safety razor, the first having a long handle and comb guard. The differences are right ot there to see and feel. The Futur is a technological whiz, finely designed and rafted. Maybe even a little over-built. The handle is long and wide, it is quite heavy and the adjustments for blade/skin contact start with fairly aggressive and goon from there. This means letting the weight of the razor do the work. Blade replacement and cleaning are simple as pie and the finish doesn't show any signs of wear after several weeks use. There was a slight hiccup with the order, but the vendor was forthright and took care of it quickly and completely.

This is a heavy, beautifully made product.

Understand that with the single adjustable blade, there is a learning curve to this tool. Notice that some have cut themselves with it. What is amazingly paradoxical is that you can irritate your gentle face , even at the lowest setting (1). Conversly with no pressure , a higher setting can be safe for many of us. After softening and heating your face, what ever setting you use, the cream or foam needs to be of high quality, and most importantly, do not press against face to get closer shave. That is where pulled skin can catch. That said, hardly touching it to your face, can provide excellent , trouble-free results.
The manufacturing quality is excellent, the snap in and out top plate requires getting used to when replacing blade. Push the top off from the side with your thumb, avoiding any contact between blade and finger.

I've used Merkur razors for the past 21 years. This particular product is the best yet, although I prefer a polished rather than satin finish.

Its not difficult to use, took 2 or 3 shaves to master using it. Have never used the adjustment for the blade angle so I could have bought a less expensive model. All in all it was great money saver to dump using 3 bladed disposables for this.

The company waited 12 days until they decided to ship it...that i DID NOT like.
I shaved a few times after receiving it. I even shaved after growing a 2 week beard and it still performed better than any of the razors I have ever used. I also shaved my head, i always shave my head and face, and it also did a fantastic job.
Some people might find it a little aggressive for their tastes but i love it and I'll be using it until it breaks down or I die...and this razor seams to be built to outlive me and my children...

I was looking for a quality good shaving razor. Quality is good. Shave is the worst ever. All cut up and irritated the two times I used it. Will not use again. Do not buy. Gillette much better. If it is not broken do not fix it.
