Merle Reagle's 'Sunday Crosswords, April 14, 2009
This review is from: Merl Reagle's Sunday Crosswords, Volume 8 (Paperback)
Merle Reagle's Sunday Crosswords are printed in the Seattle Times every Sunday and I've been hooked on them for years. The problem for me was that once a week was just not enough so I began some research and found his books on Amazon. I've ordered every one and have to discipline myself to a limit of one puzzle a day! They are truly addictive and I'm afraid I have to say that Mr. Reagle has a bit of a twisted, sick mind...and I say that in the kindest most admiring way! At times I don't think I can complete them on my own but once I get inside his mind and "get" the theme they literally fall into place...like a little miracle! I guess the thing I like the most is that you can't use a dictionary to solve his puzzles, you just have to understand his thinking and solve them all on your own, and that's a true and exciting challenge. Now he has to publish a new book in a hurry or I'll need rehab!!!

Life without Merl is no life at all, November 25, 2009
This review is from: Merl Reagle's Sunday Crosswords, Volume 8 (Paperback)
I can't speak for the whole wide world, but in mine Merl's crosswords are the ONLY puzzles worth doing. Ten years ago, after doing one just puzzle in the Sunday magazine, I became irrevocably hooked. The themes make me giggle. The clues are clever, and I seem to be of a generation that would still recognize most of his references (younger folk may not know that Kirstie Alley is the "Long follower" of Merl's clue in puzzle 15, In a Perfect World).
Last year, the Los Angeles Times Magazine, in a burst of well meaning enthusiasm, redesigned the magazine, forgoing Merl's puzzles for yet another Suduko. I complained, as did plenty of others, and after receiving an apologetic email from the magazine's editorial staff, I was pleased to see Merl's puzzle was back in the next issue.
I've tried doing other crosswords, but I can't stomach them. Like milk chocolate in the absence of dark, other puzzles are just not worth the bother.
