5.0 out of 5 stars Hauntingly Beautiful
I just received this CD yesterday and listened to it for the first time. I never saw the movie so I didn't know what to expect. This is some of the most beautiful music I have ever heard on a sountrack. I especially like the variety of sounds and way you are carried from one emotion to another. I highly recommend this to anyone who enjoys a meaningful listening...

3.0 out of 5 stars It's good but it's missing something
If you're looking for that new age vocal music that you heard on the Merlin television commercials, it ain't on this CD. Otherwise the CD's alright for a TV soundtrack

5.0 out of 5 stars Medieval at its best!, April 3, 2002
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Close your eyes and imagine a world of fantasy, honour and valor: The world of King Arthur, Merlin and the Knights of the round table. Play this Cd in the background and you're there! Truly magical score for an equally great tv series. Comprised of the best music for a TV Miniseries, this cd will allow you to recreate the magic and myth of Merlin. Melodic catchy tunes inspired by upper England traditional music, the songs in Merlin really capture the essence and soul of an era and faithfully recreate a time I wish we were living :)

5.0 out of 5 stars "Spellbinding...", May 14, 2001
By A Customer
This is not only the best score for a film i have ever heard, it is some of my all-time favourite music. The pieces are incredibly well written, and manage to be extremely dramatic, thrilling, and passionate all at once. Not only does the music express different emotions during its course, like Wonder, joy, exhilaration, hope, sadness, and despair, it completely evokes them from the listener. Having been brought in the 80s and 90s, i never really acquired a like for classical music, though i never disliked it, but this CD is among those i listen to most, even among new-age pop, hip-op, and others. BUY THIS CD, it is captivating, and you will never want to stop listening to it. it is completely SOULFUL!! Anyone with any taste in music will love this CD, so buy it now!!! you will not regret it the slightest amount!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Stuff, October 17, 2001
By
Note: my actual rating is 4.5 stars

When I listened to the "Merlin" soundtrack for the first time in a Borders, I decided not to buy it. Once I got home, I realized what a mistake I had made. This album is great, and evokes the perfect fantasy/myth/epic mood for the movie. There are enough repetitions of recognizable themes to tie the tracks together, but there is also plenty of variation. A favorite of mine is track 3, "The Walls are Whispering." Within this one track are about four themes, including a spirited battle theme (which, to this day, gives me goosebumps)and a medieval dance. Track 7, "May Angels Fly Thee Home" is a beautiful, sad piece. I hear traces of Jones' work in the movie "The Dark Crystal" (esp. in track 6) reincarnated in this soundtrack (if anyone knows where I can get that soundtrack, please let me know). Parts of this soundtrack also show a distant resemblence to the "Berceuse" from Stravinsky's "Firebird." This soundtrack truly is magical.

5.0 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL, April 30, 2001
This music is some of the best ever written. EVER. I mean it deserves to be up there with the greats like Beethoven and Mozart. It is magical, wistful, bold, daring and orchestrally massive. It is impossible to express my love of this score. Trevor Jones has got incredible talent and this work of art is solid proof of it. Buy this and you wont regret it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mystical and enchanting, May 18, 2000
By A Customer
I bought this CD not knowing whether it would be worth the money. Well, it is definately worth the money. After I got it, I listened to it for days. It never gets old. The music brings you back to a more noble time of knights, dragons, and magic. It really is worth buying. Forget about it "only" being a made for TV movie soundtrack that was written by a practically unknown composer. Trevor Jones deserves more credit for this CD. In a large compilation of CDs of Beethoven, Mozart, Vivaldi, Bach, Couperin, Handle, Purcell, etc., it is one of my best. So if you are thinking about buying it, but not really sure, I'm telling you now that it is well worth it.

5.0 out of 5 stars If I could have given it more stars, I would have!, February 17, 2000

This is my all-time favorite soundtrack. Never mind that it's a soundtrack to a television movie; it's darn good! The depth and scope of this work is nothing short of phenomenal and I admire Jones for his talent. Each track conveys such emotion, you don't need the movie to understand what to feel. (Although that was pretty darn good, as well!) The music stands alone as a terrific testament to Jones and the power of music. There's nothing like it, as there is nothing like this soundtrack! I am truly amazed that it did not receive more recognition. I simply do not possess the ability to put into words the power of this album. Perhaps the words do not exist.

5.0 out of 5 stars Medieval Britain And Arthurian Legend Collide...And Mold Very Well., April 20, 2011
As he would do a year later with "CLEOPATRA," Trevor Jones creates a score evoking Britain during the Middle Ages and Arthurian Legend. I have not seen the miniseries since high school, but the score is fantastic and magical. I recommend it along with the score of "CLEOPATRA." Listen and enjoy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Arthurian Britain comes alive under Jones, March 4, 2005
By
J. K. Moser "JKM" (Flemington, New Jersey USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Well known film and television composer Trevor Jones provides a beautiful score for this epic tv mini-series. This score is more thoughtful than it is bombastic and that creates a perfect listening experience. Unlike most other Arthur movies, there is no trumpett blairing main theme. Instead, Jones provides a theme that fits well with the attempt to make Merlin more real. He works to make the wonder of Merlin's magic as well the majesty of Arthur's realm believable and he is also able to capture the sadness of the end of Camelot and the eventual triumph as Merlin is reunited with his love. Although there are only 10 tracks, this cd is close to an hour long and I highly recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best, August 18, 1999

The soundtrack mixes a unique quality of mideval music, with that of a score based on true fantasy. This soundtrack allows you to re-live the movie, and to allow you to be apart of the ever growing MErlin saga
