Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Gray-blue and lavender endpapers decorated with fish and shells set the billowy but generally quiet tone of this collection of poems about the creatures-both real and imagined-that inhabit the briny deep. Windham's inventively designed illustrations feature borders of lobsters, snails and seaweed, and the varied selection of poems offer her opportunities for plenty of dreamy lullabies, including a sweetly endearing portrait of the "weary wee flipperling" in Rudyard Kipling's "Seal Lullaby": "The storm shall not wake thee, nor sharks overtake thee,/ Asleep in the arms of the slow-swinging seas." Opportunities for humor are less frequent and more subtle but nonetheless entertaining-as when Windham pictures the preening, lipstick-wearing fish who becomes the shark's dinner in E. V. Rieu's "The Flattered Flying Fish," or the flailing oysters in Jack Prelutsky's "Do Oysters Sneeze?" From Ogden Nash's succinct "The Eel" ("I don't mind eels/Except as meals/And the way they feels") to Ted Hughes's octopus poem "My Other Granny," the assortment here is pleasing. All ages.

From School Library Journal

Grade 3-6?"Beneath the waters/Green and cool/The mermaids keep/A swimming school." The oysters, lobsters, dolphins, and jellyfish of Marchette Chute's short poem "Undersea" are joined by many other denizens of the deep in this handsome, often humorous compilation. Lewis Carroll's "The Lobster Quadrille" is perhaps the most familiar of the 18 poems, but all have appeared in attractive children's books published over many decades. Ogden Nash is the only poet appearing twice; other notables include Lord Alfred Douglas, James Reeves, Ted Hughes, J. Patrick Lewis, X.J. Kennedy, and E.V. Rieu. Windham's cheerful paintings in a nice array of medium hues incorporate many funny details in beautiful and varied compositions. Some pages have elegant borders; others are sprinkled with small vignettes alongside poem segments. Sometimes a block of text is set into the painted scene. The picture-book format belies the sophistication of some of the entries; but overall, this felicitous mix of fanciful, dreamy, and comic offerings will please a wide audience.?Margaret Bush, Simmons College, Boston

This review is from: The Mermaid and Other Sea Poems (Library Binding)
A whimsical concoction of poems with the sea as the theme. Poems are illustrated with fantastical & colorful drawings that draw you in to the action & focus of the poem. The personal reason for my purchasing this book was because one of Windham's illustrations was inspirational in the tattoo of a mermaid that I got about a year ago. Fun for reading to kids. Short & Sweet bedtime rhymes!
