Very cute book!,

My 5 year old daughter loves this book. It is very sweet with a nice happy ending. I would recommend this book to anyone with a girl aged 3-6 who loves mermaids!!! It is also a great book for little girls who are longing for a sister (especially those who got a brother instead!)!

I made a mistake and did not read this book prior to reading it to my three year old. After page one or two I ad-libbed the entire book. The themes of I do not like my brother, I fight and pull the hair of my friends-with pictures of this, and my friends are pains too is not a good message to kids. This book is in the recycle bin after 24 hours in my house.

Bedtime Reading For A Child With A Little Brother,
By
This review is from: Mermaid Sister (Hardcover)
As a little brother, who I'm sure was probably viewed as a bit of a nuisance to my older siblings, I probably am not the best person to give advice like this. Yet, after reading this book, I expect a few older sisters might understand what it is like to be a part of a family where people have to learn to accept their siblings - their differences, their mannerisms, and the like.
That said, Fraser's picture book about a young girl who 'hires' a mermaid to be her sister is very charming and cute. Shelly is fed up with her little brother Gordy, and decides to toss a bottle into the ocean, hoping to find someone who will be her 'sister' - apply onshore, the ad read. Well, the applicant turns out to be Coral, a mermaid with a little brother of her own. Both girls, despite their differences, have fun together sharing peanut butter and jellyfish sandwiches and painting each other's toenails (or fins.) But Shelly learns that she can be upset with people close to her and still be friends, something that although isn't presented in the text remains a very true and real aspect of life. This story is perfect for a young girl who found out about a new addition to their family, or even just any girl who loves to dream about new friends. An out of the ordinary mermaid book. Again,as I collect mermaids, I thought this appropriate for my personal collection. I decided to buy this book after I read it from our local library.
The story plot is modern and age appropriate. The illustrations are realistic and NOT too wacky ugly like some other mermaid books in the same genre.

Mermaid Sister- a great book for a mermaid loving girl!,

I bought this book with some other mermaid books for my 4 1/2 year old daughter who loves mermaids. They were all cute, but this is her favorite. It's about a little girl with a brother who wishes for a sister, and gets a mermaid sister. It's a really cute story with beautiful illustrations. It's especially good for a mermaid loving girl who only has a brother. My daughter asks for this book every night, and then wants to act out parts of it and pretend she has a mermaid sister. We love this book.

A cheery story about the joys of friendship and siblinghood,

Mermaid Sister is a delightful children's picturebook about Shelly, a young girl tired of her little brother, who befriends a little mermaid named Coral. It's great to have a mermaid sister instead of an annoying little brother! But there are down sides to having a sister - Shelly and Coral experience their first fight, and Coral is lonely for the ocean. But when they return to the beach, it's not goodbye forever - just the opposite, as Coral has a little mer-brother of her own to introduce. A cheery story about the joys of friendship and siblinghood.

This book is high priced for what is essentially a trite story. The pictures are lovely but overall if I'd seen it in a store I would not have purchased it. I decided not to return it as my granddaughter will enjoy looking at the pictures but the story is not really interesting in this day of Dora's adventures.

This book is really cute...the story, the art, and the colors are great. I took off one star because of it's size. I just don't understand making large thin books, which don't fit on a lot of bookcases.
