Book Description

In an underwater world that is as beautiful as it is ruthless, the mertribes are not about to make peace with each other. Selinne is a mermaid who is certain she can take care of herself. But when she is captured by the bloodthirsty Litiants, she finds unlikely help from Gabriel, a warrior who appears as indifferent as he is handsome. As Selinne struggles to make sense of the good and evil around her, she discovers that there is no escaping love or her place in the raging war of the sea.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"This book has everything:  war, magic, forbidden love, duty, and destiny.  It is hard to believe that this story's author manged to pack such a complete and interesting story into 253 pages." - Frishawn Rasheed of WTF Are You Reading
"What I liked about this book was that it had a strong heroine, thought out character histories, and a vivid world where they lived. Even though there are two suitors interested in her hand, this also doesn't rule the story like so many other fantasy novels." - Tiffany of AngelizedFirst.com

4.0 out of 5 stars Merminia August 25, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
As a reader, I haven't read too much mermaid fiction. Not too sure why; maybe it's just because I haven't found anything that sounded intersting. But Merminia certainly struck a chord with me, and I loved it!

The premise of this novel is extremely unique, and I enjoyed learning about the different tribes of merpeople that exist in the world Emm Cole creates in Merminia. The tribes all had different values, customs, and beliefs, just like real people.

On that line, the characters were pretty awesome, too. Selinne, the main character who's determined and a do-it-yourself kind of girl, is the type of lead female I like to see in the books I read. She's adventurous, always getting into trouble, and she drags her childhood friend Aramis with her. And gosh, is he a sweetheart! My heart goes out to that adorable merman! My favorite character, though, has got to be the perplexing, yet alluring Gabriel. He sounds like quite the catch! (pun intended hehe)

The writing style of this novel was a little more sophisticated than I'm used to, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. There were some parts where I had to reread the sentence to try to decipher it and understand what was happening, and a few times I felt like the sentence could have been a lot more succinct, while at the same time attention-seeking and suspenseful. Again, that's just my opinion of the style. Everyone has their own tastes when it comes to the style of a novel.

I also enjoyed the dynamic world that plays out in Merminia. So many things are still undiscovered, and I hope I can find out more soon! I woulc recommend this book to anyone looking for a great read with some action, suspense, and romance. I thoroughly enjoyed it! :)

5.0 out of 5 stars A watery delight January 24, 2013
Format:Paperback
It is not often that one will read a book about mermaids. The mermaid genre was not one that I knew existed. But Emm Cole has made a genre of her own, even if one existed before.
The water world that this author has created is a deep and enticing one. It drags you down to its depths and won't let you go. But do not expect a retelling of The Little Mermaid. This is a much more fascinating tale. One that builds the beginning of a saga.
The story revolves around a mermaid named Selinne, a mermaid who possesses the magical ability to heal. It is the story of her and the world of the mermaids. Mermaids with differing tribes, differing powers, and a magical ring. One that is powerful enough to control the fates.
It is an exciting story, and one that leaves you wanting more. I will look forward to the rest of the books from Emm Cole. A truly gifted new talent.

Emm Cole DROWNS you ( pun TOTALLY intended ^_~ )in mer-captivation from the very first page.. and it doesn't end until you run out of pages to turn..

Original, magical, heartfelt, suspenseful, intriguing and just plain WOW.. are some of the words that come to mind when trying to label this book.. especially that last one.. WOW.. this is the first word that comes into your mind when you turn that last page and realize you have read the last word.. your next action.. guaranteed.. will be you going to your computer to see if there is a sequel.. luckily for us.. I just heard from a very good source that the sequel is due to come out this spring. FINGERS CROSSED.

Don't know how they would make this into a movie.. perhaps an amazing, more teenage/young adult version of a pixar type movie.. but that was all I could think throughout the entire book, was how AMAZING and original of a movie this would be, IF it were to be done right.. with that said, my thoughts are that this has the potential to be the next Harry Potter or Twilight.

Each character, plot, back-story, mer-environment or creature you come across in this magical tale, immediately envelopes you; giving you such strong feelings towards them whether it be loving or hating a character, or just wishing so incredibly much that you could BE there in this beautiful world the author has so vividly created.

A quick read, Emm Cole packs A LOT of war, love, mystery and intrigue into a mere 253 pages that will keep you swiping your kindle until you are left with nothing but the thought of.. "WHAT! There BETTER be a sequel!"

LOVED IT.

4.0 out of 5 stars "Merminia" A Tale That Is Fins Above the Rest November 14, 2012
Format:Paperback
Emm Cole's "Merminia" is a welcome change from the "humanized" mer tales that seem to be all the rage at the moment. This tale in no way involves those of us who live above the waves, and in that alone sets a precedent for the mer storyline.

Selinne
In her we find a very realistic heroine. She is a mermaid who is not about to cower or live in fear; mo matter the circumstance. This is not to say that she is rash in her decisions. That is very far from the case. She is in fact the one who sacrifices herself to the enemy so that someone that she loves is not tortured and used against her.
Gabriel
He is what could be referred to as a reluctant bad boy. He is only playing the role because that is the one that he was given. It is apparent from his opening scenes however that he wants the "high road" so much more than the one that has been charted as his course. This makes for quite a dilemma for the reader looking for that perfect good/evil or white/black situation, because Gabriel has definitely made a home for himself in the gray.
Merconius
If you are looking for a character that you will love to hate; look no further than Merconius, ruthless leader of the Litiant mer-tribe and Gabriel's father. This is a merman who will stop at nothing to achieve total domination over the seas. Even if that means that he has to kill and or enslave every mer in it.
Aramis
He is second in command in the Merminian army, a trusted family friend and Selinne's shadow. He is always there to play white knight to Selinne's wayward damsel. The question is: Is family loyalty the only reason that he sticks so close to the young princess.

Very poor writing. Abounds with cliches. Reads like it was written by a junior high-school student. Painfully bad. Not worth your time.
