I bought these on sale at my local REI for $100 after I returned the Merrell Moab, which I have reviewed on Amazon and given two stars. By contrast, this Chameleon is a five star shoe for me. Here is why I like it.

    1. I have learned from experience that hiking shoes tend to run small, especially if you wear thicker socks. I bought these a full size up from my street shoe size, and they fit great with thin or thick socks. The fit is snug, but they breathe well.

    2. The laces stay tied (something I used to take for granted until I bought the Moab), and it is easy to put these on and take them off. Unlike the Moab, which uses Merrell's own waterproofing membrane (which doesn't breathe very well), these use Gore Tex, which is great.

    3. I have used these in wet conditions, but unlike other reviews I haven't had any traction problems.

    4. As one review notes, these are heavy shoes, but I think that's true of all hiking shoes. But it's not something that prevents me from walking miles in them comfortably.

    5. These look great with hiking shorts or jeans, are perfect for casual use or on the trail.

Bottom line: I am very pleased with this purchase.

Update May 23, 2013: I went hiking today in my local park with periods of driving rain. I wore these on a trail with hard pack gravel, mud, and large puddles of water. After that I was on grass, asphalt and concrete. Regardless of the surface the traction was fine, and no how hard it rained or how may puddles I walked through, these stayed nice and dry. I was very glad that I had ordered these a full size up from my street shoe size because after a few miles I could definitely tell my feet had expanded--it was humid and muggy out. But while these were snug, they were also comfortable.

These shoes fit well. Some other reviewers indicated that they believed that the sizes run small. I've found that initially, the shoes seem a little shorter than they should be. I've always found this to be actually untrue. You need to put some miles on them to loosen them up! After they are broken-in, you'll appreciate having a shoe that is form fitting and supportive enough to prevent your foot from sliding around inside the shoe. Hiking shoes need to prevent blisters and these shoes, for me, do that. Some other reviewers commented about wet weather grip. You do need to put some miles on to roughen the tread before reaching ultimate grip. The only real issue I see as a negative are the laces. You can tie these laces with double knots and still have the ends reach the earth. The laces in this particular pair also started fraying after about 2 weeks. I replaced the laces with a pair that was made with solid material throughout rather than a core with an outside covering. I don't know what Merrell had in mind in putting these laces on these shoes. Appears to be fashion over toughness and actual use in the field. If you want a five start shoe at a higher price, take a look at Patagonia Footwear Men's Drifter A/C Gore-Tex Hiking Shoe in Brown Leather.

I enjoy these should because they are durable and have a lot of arch support. The wrap around the front toe and the big wrap around the back is great for durability. A regular sneak on me would blow out in the toe in six months but these last more than a year for me.

These shoes have a very rugged look and feel to them. I was surprised when I put them on how stiff they are - a lot like a hiking boot. This led to some initial discomfort, which has disappeared over time. Also feel a lot taller wearing them. They are definitely in their element on dirt trails rather than on sealed surfaces. Be aware they are incredibly slippery on hard wet surfaces - I have had two near misses with them on so far, one on a flight of stairs. That aside I would say they are a good general purpose shoe, which is what I was after.

I know the brand, have worn Merrell Chameleon for years. A Podiatrist recommended this shoe for me and I can't say enough good things.
Buying them through Amazon from this vendor? It was great and nice to have just what I wanted, a good price, and delivered quick.

This is the best Merrell, below ankle, hiking shoe made. Most hiking shoe Merrells lack the stiff sole construction and extremely rugged toe/heel featured in this shoe. Best uses is do hiking or light weekend excursions. I had an earlier version of this same shoe that the sole wore out prior to any degradation of the upper shoe integrity.

My husband loves these shoes. These are his third pair. There isn't any break in time, they are comfortable from the start.
