About the Author

Since 1937. Merriam-Webster is America's foremost publisher of language-related reference works. The company publishes a diverse array of print and electronic products, including Merriam-Webster's Collegiate® Dictionary, Eleventh Edition – America's best-selling desk dictionary – and Webster's Third New International Dictionary, Unabridged. Merriam-Webster can be considered the direct lexicographical heir of Noah Webster. In 1843, the company bought the rights to the 1841 edition of Webster's magnum opus, An American Dictionary of the English Language, Corrected and Enlarged. Since that time, Merriam-Webster editors have carried forward Noah Webster's work, creating some of the most widely used and respected dictionaries and reference books in the world.

This dictionary has solved our weekly after school drama over the weekly homework assignment of "Definitions." My 3rd grade son has found looking up words and copying down their definitions far easier to understand in this dictionary than in the adult dictionary and unlike dictionary's for younger children this book has a very complete collection of words. Highly recommend!

I ordered this dictionary as all the dictionaries I have at home are collegiate or higher and my 3rd grader needed simple but accurate definitions for her grade level. This dictionary will provide that until she starts junior high. Easy to read, but not too over-simplified in either language or definition. It's a great starter dictionary for the elementary set.

My 8 year old loves it! Words are kid friendly and for some words there are illustrations to help comprehend the word. I would recommend this dictionary.

I purchased this dictionary for my daughter who is eight and in third grade so we could have an easy reference source for looking up words that was not on line. One of the first words we wanted to look up was the verb "mugged" because it is in both Tales of Fourth Grade nothing, by Judy Blume, and From the Mixed Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler by E. L. Konigsburg. In fact my class had been asking me what the word meant. I had wanted to check whether it said by gunpoint. When a dictionary that is designed for this age group does not have the verb form of the word mug, which is in two important pieces of literature for children in the ages of 8-12 then I think it is limited. What I like is the discussion of the phonics of pronunciation at the beginning of each letter and the explantation of how to use the dictionary at the beginning, though it is somewhat dry. I also like that there are occasional pictures and they look more grown up than the color photos in a picture dictionary.

I would not let this be the only dictionary in the home but this is easier to use. Because it is less intimidating seems to make it more likely to BE used.

I ordered this book for my 7 year old son and he absolutely loves it! He takes it everywhere he goes with him and when he sees a word he doesn't know, he quickly grabs his dictionary. Definitions are simple yet effective for his age.
