5.0 out of 5 stars This is an English to French dictionary October 24, 2010
Format:Kindle Edition
I am surprised everyone is getting so confused. This dictionary is for French definitions of English words, not the other way around. So obviously it's going to seem basic, and obviously, 99% of words won't be in it if you're looking for definitions of French words. This is NOT for English speakers trying to improve their understanding of French texts, but for English speakers wanting to know the equivalent of an English expression in French, or for French speakers wanting to better understand and translate texts in English!

It is actually a very good dictionary, not basic at all, as it focuses on translation issues, by giving you English words in different contexts, and their equivalent in French.

And it did say in the product description: "Access French definitions and explanations for English words"...

1.0 out of 5 stars No alphabet links - poor navigation for an ebook December 29, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
While this may be a perfectly fine English-French dictionary in hard copy, asking a user to "page" through the entire alphabet worth of content to get to the 'T' section is just plain stupid. I was planning to use this on the fly. I need a Table of Contents that allows me to jump to the section I need in a couple of touches.

Downloaded it and tried to get to the TOC, but got the A section. Returned it. Enough said.

4.0 out of 5 stars The KINDLE edition has one unique feature April 9, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I was tempted by the more comprehensive Robert and others, but the Merriam-Webster has one fantastic feature that I haven't seen in ANY other English-to-X dictionary: it is set in my Kindle as a FRENCH book. This means that I can do an instant full French-dictionary look-up of the suggested translations to get more information - exactly like what you should do with a printed dictionary. With others set as ENGLISH books the Kindle goes to the English dictionary for the selected word. Quite annoying! I wonder if it was some kind of lucky accident, since even the Merriam-Websters for other languages don't seem to have this feature. I suppose there's no way to permanently set a book's default language for yourself?

P.S. I see now that there is a black arrow next to your default dictionary title in the 'boxed' dictionary entry that comes up when you select a word. This allows you to bring up one of your other dictionaries, so you CAN see what your French-English dictionary has to say about the suggested translation-word fairly quickly, after all. But (for me, at least) only for the default dictionary does the box offer a direct link to the actual text. (Not as big a problem as it was, because the Kindle seems to be getting better at processing the dictionary text into its pop-up box without garbling it.) So I now deduct a star, because the Collins Robert is not too far behind in functionality, while being superior in coverage and accuracy.

I am french and I read mostly in english. When I read in french I don't need to translate words to english, but when I read in english I do need sometimes to translate a word to french. That's why I looked for an english-french dictionary and not an english-french/french-english dictionary. This one does the job, when I don't understand a word in english it gives me the meaning in french.

I completely agree with M.A. BLAIR and I really don't understand how people don't know a one way dictionary from a two way one.

So if your first language is french and you like reading in english but sometimes need to look up a word in a dictionary, this one is for you !

1.0 out of 5 stars horrible dictionary October 5, 2013
By HDH
Format:Kindle Edition
This dictionary is very difficult to search even with the kindle search feature. I hated it and returned it as soon as I realized the problem. In fact, I would return it again if I could. I keep typing because this review is demanding more words.A whole lot more than I'm willing to offer...

1.0 out of 5 stars Looking up words is a mission January 30, 2013

Words are not looked up automatically if the dictionary is selected. One needs to browse to the dictionary to look up a word.
