I've been waiting for a product like this for decades. I've been trying to improve my Spanish by reading books, but its a hassle to drag a book and a giant Spanish-English dictionary around. So I rejoiced when I saw this product and didn't hesitate to click "Buy".

Problem is, this dictionary can't recognize conjugated verbs. For instance, "tenía" was translated as "tapeworm". Further research revealed that "tenia" really does mean "tapeworm", but once you put that little slash over the i, its the imperfect tense of tener. I found it depressing that this dictionary spontaneously removed the accent mark to give me a noun rather than one of the most basic verbs around. And the saddest part is, this was best result I got for any conjugated verb; every other time the word was just ignored. I consider this to be a severe flaw, as identifying conjugated verbs is a major part of why I need a dictionary.

If a verb wasn't conjugated, the dictionary did pick it up. For instance, it correctly identified "poner" as "to put" and it gave some nice examples of ways to use the word.

Also, this dictionary is fantastic for all non-verb uses. For instance, I never knew that "de una vez" meant "all at once".

Another flaw, though I think this is more a Kindle problem than anything to do with this dictionary: I bought both the English-Spanish and the Spanish-English dictionaries. I set my Kindle's dictionary to Spanish-English, popped open a Spanish book, and looked up a line. The Lookup menu popped up but it was completely blank. I inspected my Settings again and found my Kindle had changed itself to the English-Spanish dictionary. I tried this several times; sometimes rebooting, sometimes not - every time it would change the default dictionary to the English-Spanish. Eventually I had to call up the Kindle Customer support and ask them to remove the English-Spanish dictionary from my Kindle. (in fairness to them, they were very nice about it and refunded my money.) Once the other dictionary was gone, the problem was resolved. (I am using a Kindle 1, so perhaps the newer models do not have this problem?)

To sum up, I am disappointed with this product. It's nice when it works, but I don't know if it is enough for me to forgive its pathetic drawbacks.

OK, I've been looking for a Spanish-English Default Dictionary while and jumped on this one. To test it out I also downloaded the Spanish translation of Kipling's The Jungle Book.

Alas and alack. Page 1 Line 1 couldn't figure out parecian. OK a little tough maybe.

Line Two - couldn't find habia?!? Uh Oh.

Didn't get much better. No estaba??

It did define el, las, en etc. Every time :-(

Leaving on a positive note. Installation (Kindle1) was easy. Home->Menu->Settings-> Primary Dictionary -> Change Cha-Ching

Although it is indicated that this dictionary could be used as default dictioanry in Kindle, there is a problem with setting it as default in Kindle Touch. Whatever one may do (as the support department suggested), the problem cannot be solved. This dictionary never pops up when trying to use it with Spanish books.

Be forewarned!!! I downloaded this item expecting it to be not just Spanish-English but also English-Spanish, as most translation dictionaries go both ways. I was surprised to learn that I could not find the Spanish word for an English word I wanted to say, which made this item less than useful during my recent trip to Mexico.

If you're hard up for a Spanish to English dictionary which gets confused over reflexive and direct and indirect objects added to Spanish words, e.g., dígamelo, then this is your dictionary.

I'm going to wait until somebody launches an equal to the Oxford English Dictionary that comes with the Kindle.

I gave it two stars because I'm not going to "hate" anything; that's a slippery slope my friends. Wait, just wait for something better because this dictionary sucks...

I bought this dictionary for use with my kindle touch after initially purchasing a different Spanish English dictionary that did not work.

At first I was fairly please with it. When looking up words I would probably get an actual definition 60% of the time. Not great but not terrible either. However, recently, I've been having issues where it won't return a definition at all, even for very simple words. After feeling as if it was telling me 'no definition found' for an abnormally high number of words, I tested it with words like 'cabeza' (head) and STILL it told me 'no definition found'. It seems as if this is a kindle issue rather than a dictionary issue but since it is called the 'kindle edition' both M-W and amazon should make a greater effort to remedy this situation. I have tried Amazon's suggestion of doing a restart of my kindle. No impact.

In addition, I second the complaints of JZ regarding the dictionary. in fact I've copied and pasted his remarks because I don't feel like typing anymore.
-------------------------------

From JZ's review--

1. It cannot find definition of verb-pronoun combined words (examples are: casarse, pensandolo, digamelo ...). Since a large proportion of the Spanish verbs are attached by reflective, direct and/or indirect pronouns, this means you will have to rely on another form of dictionary while having this particular dictionary installed, otherwise you will not find definition of a large proportion of verbs.

2. It cannot always identify the correct conjugation of the verb; as a result, it often produces irrelevant definitions based on an incorrect word.

3. A new entry is attached to the contents of the previous entry without a sign of division. Could not figure out why they can't put a division sign between the two separate, unrelated entries. This only shows that the product was not fully tested before going to the market.

4. I can't figure it out either, why it uses only two precious lines to display the definitions. Since most words would need more than two lines to fully define it, you would always need to go to the full dictionary page. This might be okay if Kindle is a very fast machine; unfortunately this is not the case. As a result, you have to wait the full dictionary page to appear, then wait for it to disappear, before you can resume your normal reading.

5. It goes only one-way Spanish-English; since kindles allows only one dictionary at a time, once you assigned it as the default, you lose the ability to do English-Spanish, or English-English.
-------------------------------------------------------

Please fix this product for use with the kindle!!!!!!

I assumed this was like most language dictionaries--spanish to english and vica versa. Mistake. It only has half of what I needed. The vocabulary is limited as well which doesn't make sense since it is electronic and doesn't make the book any heavier to carry. Finally, maybe most annoyingly, there isn't a search engine so you have to page through the book to find your word. Very time consuming.

Other similar dictionaries I own (French, German, Italian) have both the translations (French to English and English to French) in the same volume. This one doesn't.
