Our son found this dictionary and purchased it himself. As a deaf student, he has poured over the pages with delight. It is a wonderful reference for those with language problems, learning disabilities, and the curious in general. We were so impressed we donated 25 copies to our son's school for classroom use. The students and teachers have loved it!

Good lay out and high quality paper. Pictures are fine. But more like a small encyclopedia than a dictionary. Major drawback is small font letters, not easy to read.Bit disappointed, could have been better.

Merriam-Webster Visual Dictionary is an excellent reference book for kids and people whose native language is not English.

This book is an amazing way to teach children (an some adults :-)) the name and the right spelling of different items.
Beautiful illustrations and easy to understend writings.
I've bought this book for my nephew, but it's so beautiful i'll keep it to myself.

I purchased this dictionary for someone else, and they were thrilled with the content and pictures. I personally have an older dictionary like it, and think that having the visual references is fantastic. Words are important, but, as the old saying goes, "a picture says a thousand words". Sorry, Merriam, but we art-types love those pics!

I find that this book is a useful tool to use with my ESL students. They can learn the names of the tools they use at work, and words for the items in their daily lives in an easy to understand format. It is a marvelous teaching tool, and has saved me hours of Internet searching and printing to prepare lessons.

I bought this dictionary for my 8 year old son. It is a little advanced, but he likes it and is learning how to use the Index. He hasn't quite gotten the hang of it, but he really likes the dictionary. I like the references and detailed explanations. It is a good buy and he will grow into it. I am happy I bought this. Great service from Amazon, as usual.

We have been delighted with the quality of the pictures in this book. It is enjoyable to look at, and it makes a good learning resource for the home school. Note - there is a section on anatomy with frontal nudity. These pages can be stapled shut or removed if you wish - don't miss the rest of the book! There are chapters on Astronomy, the Earth, Plants, Animals, Food and Kitchen, House, Gardening, Do-It-Yourself, Arts and Architecture, Communications, Transport and Machinery, Energy, Science, Society, and Sports and Games. Our boys ages 17 and 12 loved the pictures of sailing ships, weapons(modern and ancient), sports, architecture and animals. I loved the pictures of cuts of meat and types of mushrooms, spices and cheeses. Very educational!

Whenever one thinks of " Webster Dictionary " one visualizes a big , heavy book, terribly serious and with thousands of very accurate definitions explaining, or trying to, origins and meanings of words. Useful of course, but almost always dry as a pile of sand and not meant for young children. What a revelation Merriam-Webster's Visual Dictionary is !!!!!! Scientific, explanatory and extremely useful but in such a novel way.... Children love it, middle age people adore it and everybody wonders why nobody had ever thought of creating it any time sooner. Luckily it is now here, for all of us to use and enjoy and I am sure it will soon be in every home, classroom and library. Well done Merriam-Webster, and as they say, " Better late than never "
