I had originally gotten this book for my 8yr old but it was a little too advanced for her. The text is small, more like an adults dictionary as opposed to a child's dictionary. The definitions are not easy for younger children to read on their own. It is however very clear so she did understand the definitions after having them read to her. All in all it is a very good choice.

I purchased hard cover Merriam-Webster's Elementary Dictionary for each one of my First Grade Class to give at the end of the school year as a special prize. The next day two of the boys brought their dictionaries back to school with ALL of the bird pictures in the dictionary marked to show me. Each one could also read the description of the birds pictured. This is a very complete, well illustrated dictionary for any American child aged 6-14. I can see years of use for each dictionary as the children progress to upper levels. I plan to purchase the same dictionary for my class next year. I have several Scholastic dictionaries in the classroom but they are not as well researched as Merriam-Webster.

I wanted a dictionary for my 8 year old son that was user friendly for a child of that age. I wanted clear, easy to read meanings for the words that wasn't over his head. It was exactly what I had hoped for. He loves it and prefers to use it over asking me to help him (not that I mind helping him)!!

The dictionary has been intended for a nine years old girl who didn't has any English lessons till then. The book is easy to use, the explanations are simple and navigating through is arousing further interest. We think it is not only a dictionary but even more some first encyclopedia which feed the curiosity of the young ones as soon as they can read!

MY DAUGHTER IS SEVEN AND WAS REALLY EXICTED TO RECEIVE THIS. I DON'T ALLOW HER TO USE THE ADULT DICTIONARY BECAUSE OF SOME OF THE WORDS IN IT. SHE WILL FIND THOSE OUT WHEN SHE GROWS UP BUT THIS IS GREAT. THE DESCRIPTION OF IT IS WONDERFUL, SHE REALLY ENJOYS IT, AND LOOKS UP WORDS FOR FUN NOT JUST FOR SCHOOL. GLAD THAT I MADE THIS PURCHASE.

I bought this for my 6 1/2 year old boy figuring it would serve him well for several years. He loves it!

My 10 year old has been using this dictionary for six months. He likes it so much that he asked to bring it to school and keep it in his desk rather than use the dictionary provided by his school. I am now purchasing a second copy for him to use at home. The definitions are clear and the illustrations are excellent. It is rare that a word he is looking for is not in this dictionary. When that happens, we turn to the Merriam-Webster's Intermediate Dictionary. I give Merriam-Webster Dictionary products as gifts to my nieces and nephews; that's how impressed I am with their products. I'm an educator and take learning very seriously. I only want the best products and this one passed my rigorous standards. You won't be disappointed. Please note I am referring to Merriam-Webster products not Webster's.

I thought the language was very adult and archaic - some of the definitions might have been right in the 1950s or 1960s but are not appropriate now - see the definitions for colored or hippy. I would not buy another MW dictionary after seeing this.

THIS WAS A PURCHASE FOR MY GRANDSON. HIS TEACHER HAD ONE IN HIS CLASSROOM THAT HE COULDN'T TAKE HOME WITH HIM. WHEN I TOLD HIM THAT I COULD ORDER HIM ONE, HE WAS VERY EXCITED. THE BOOK ARRIVED QUICKER THAN EXPECTED AND HE WAS VERY PLEASED. THANK YOU FOR PROVIDING ALL THE POSSIBILITIES OF PURCHASES YOU HAVE.

Book used but in good condition. Definitely, book condition is correctly described. Dictionary is constantly being used for my son's school homework.
