When my Pyr/Akbash mix came home as a puppy, I was told that Pyrs and similar flock guardian breeds should have no more than about 26% protein in their dry food. That eliminated everything but lamb, venison/game, and chicken bases in most brands, as well as almost all grain-free blends. Chicken has been linked to allergies, so I crossed that off as well just to be on the safe side. She's a pretty fussy eater and although for the first meal or two she'd show interest in several of the dry foods I tried from various brands (Blue Buffalo, Taste of the Wild, and two or three others), she'd quickly start turning up her nose at it unless I mixed it with wet food. The Merrick Lamb is the only one she's consistently been willing to eat dry (although I usually do mix in a spoonful or two of Merrick's Wingalings wet food, anyway, or some meat table scraps). She's in perfect health with a great coat and in spite of the higher recommendations for feeding on the package, maintains a consistent weight on only about 21/2, max 3 cups a day (plus perhaps 1/4 can of Wingalings, a raw beef bone about every other day, and the occasional handful of Mother Hubbard's mini bones). A 30-lb bag lasts at least a full month, which I think is great for a 100-lb dog and more than justifies the cost (and it's usually about $10-$15 cheaper per bag from Amazon than at my local stores and most other online sites).

My 3-year-old lab mix has eaten Merrick since we adopted her a year ago, and we couldn't be happier with it. She was on Dog Chow when we got her, so we transitioned her from that to Merrick. It was amazing to see her quickly improve--she put on weight (she was bone-thin), her coat got sleek and shiny, and her stools became much less smelly and firmer. I love that you can switch flavors of Merrick to give the dog variety, and that they promise whole foods and no fillers, etc.

I recently considered switching to Blue Buffalo because I've heard good things, but after doing some research online, I'm sticking with Merrick. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. And more importantly, Merrick has 5 stars on Dog Food Advisor, whereas BB has 4 (unless you count Wilderness, but I'm worried that's too high-protein for my dog).

I always order Merrick on Amazon because it's way cheaper here than in the store, even when Petco has sales on the dog food--the sale price is Amazon's normal price, and I get Prime shipping with Amazon!

Bottom line: Merrick is a high-quality, trustworthy dog food and you really will see the difference in your dog.

I have the world's pickiest eater. I've tried Blue Buffalo, Science Diet, Taste of the Wild, you name it. The response has been middling at best, she'll eat a few bites and then run off.

This is the only one she will eat straight out of the bag without the addition of wet food.

It makes me sleep much easier at night knowing that there are no ingredients form China in Merrick. My dogs are my kids and I certainly don't want to poison them in order to save a few dollars.

I give it 4 stars because my dog likes it and I think it is better than what I was previously feeding her. The price has increased more than $10 for 30# bag in just a few weeks and not sure why but current price is in line with local 'big box' pet store and local 'little guys' so maybe I will shop the local small business rather than have it shipped and then deal with a very large box for recycle day!

Had a tough go at it while feeding our dogs the grain free varieties of Merrick. They didn't get too interested in it. So we changed to this food and our dogs don't leave the bowls until the bowls are licked clean. Feels good that they enjoy good quality chow.

I had to switch my dogs food recently. He was eating Iams, and it was giving him constant diarrhea. After two weeks of needing to go outside to relieve himself every 2-3 hours (including all night), I switched him to this high quality food that has no fillers. Since then, he is noticeably happier, and no more messy diarrhea. He really loves this food. I don't think the Iams food is bad, per se. I'm only guessing, but I think my dog has a hard time digesting the corn in the Iams food.

I have a Rottie, she is 5 months old and allergic to chicken. After doing a ton of research on what food to feed my pup i went wit merricks. Now this still contains some poultry meal in it but the main ingredient is lamb and it has been a miracle since we got it. My puppy loves it. I mix in a little pumpkin with it and her poop is finally solid and her coat is shiny and soft. We also give this to our 9 year old Chihuahua she loves it. This food is cheaper on here then at my local petco and petsmart doesnt sell Merricks. This is your best bet especially if you go with amazon prime.

We have a Malamute and a Puggle. The Mal tried everything from Taste of the WIld to Pinnacle and even Merrick Grain Free. Stool was inconsistent and not often as solid as we'd like. Tried this food and haven't looked back since. Stool is finally the most solid we've seen it on a consistent basis and as for the puggle, he use to eat generic pedigree or purina but since switching to Merrick he has been much more excited for meals and devours quickly instead of picking at it all day.
