My dogs really enjoy this food & we're on auto-delivery for it. I admit that they're not picky boys & would probably eat just about any canned food. But, I'm a fan of the Merrick brand. My corgis have been eating Merrick food and treats since they were young. Merrick uses great ingredients. The first few ingredients in Cowboy Cookout are beef, beef broth, sweet potato, carrots, green beans, apples & peas. Plus, Merrick does their own manufacturing. To me, that's a big deal - no enormous plant that manufactures food for dozens of different companies. (Seems that once one brand of food at these large plants is recalled, others follow. Including some supposedly premium brands.)

I'm happy with my dogs' health on Cowboy Cookout. But, they'd be doing just as well on any of the Merrick canned food. (Wingaling used to be our favorite till the number of wings in the can seemed to go down.)

My dog loves this food and seems to thrive on it. I mix it with Merrick dry food to bulk it up a bit and that works fine. There are two issues though that made me lower my rating. The first is that the consistency among the cans is very different. Some are mostly chunks, some are about right, and others are so liquid I have to add more dry food or it looks like soup. It makes me wonder if their production process is being properly supervised, which also raises concerns about the consistency of the ingredients. The other problem is that the cans often arrive severely dented or partially crushed. They're not getting that way during shipping because the outer carton is never damages, so either these are seconds or they're being mishandled in the Amazon warehouse. So far I haven't had any leak from the damage, but it is a concern.

Delicious! At least, that's the impression I get.

When you open the can, your ears are greeted with the sounds of tumbleweeds rolling across the dry plains, guitars strumming, crackling campfire, restless horses breathing in the background, and yodeling. Your nose picks up the bouquet of charred mesquite, canned beans burning on a fire, and the b.o. of the other cowboy across the fire from you. Good stuff. You can almost hear the coyotes baying at the full moon on the mesa behind you.

Our French Basset is not a finicky eater, in fact, she will eat almost anything she can get into her mouth. But, she has an allergic reaction to a broad range of ingredients commonly found in dog food; the result is we have relatively few choices of foods we can provide to her. Most of the dog food we can provide is reminiscent of unappetizing hospital food. Well, that is, until we found Merrick canned dog food. I suspect if you took some Merrick canned dog food out of a can, put it into a soup bowl and warmed it up, you could serve it and any human would happily eat it and ask for more. Needless to say, our dog loves it (as does my son's Australian Kelpie) and, having read the ingredients, we feel good about providing it to her. So far, over the last several months, we have served her Merrick's French Café and Cowboy Cook Out. Her health excels, there have been no indications of allergic reaction, she licks the bowl clean and we feel good about what we are feeding her.

Merrick does a good job of making quality food dogs want to eat. I bought this because it contains no poultry and my dog starts to scratch if I use a poultry based food. There is some egg in this but it does not seem to be enough to cause a problem. It had a great rating on Dog Food Advisor and another site devoted to the care of Cavalier King Charles Spaniels which is what I have. Some people have complained about the size of the pieces but it is easy to cut them up with a fork if it is a problem. I also have a 15 year old Tibetan Spaniel and both of them enjoy this food. I pour it over their dry food and warm it up. They have no issues with digestion or stools. The best thing from an owner's point of view is that the smell is actually good and the cans have pull tabs. We are on our third order and all have arrived without damage.

Warning!!!! Unfortunately, Merrick is still using cans lined with BPA, chemical banned in Europe and for infant plastics and cans, most human food manufacurers are not using that. Merrick told me that they do not use BPA in small cans, but still use it in 13.2 oz cans (which is their large can). When I asked why, they told me it keeps the food safe! No answer when I asked how about our dogs, it should keep them safe! It is not an excuse, many dog food companies do not use this dangerous chemical on their cans. Please check with manufacturer of your canned dog food, if they are using BPA in their cans. Be safe and keep your dogs healthy!

Our dogs have been eating Merrick's canned dog food for over a decade. The grain free beef and chicken versions are staples around our place, but the canned dinners like this "Cowboy Cookout" and "Brauts-N-Tots" disappear just as fast. The main difference with the canned dinners is that they include chunks of vegetables and gravy with the meat. Granted, we could buy food at a cheaper price, but Merrick hasn't had any of those scary recalls we've heard of where dogs drop dead. I'll pop the extra few cents a day to keep ours around longer.
