Editorial Reviews

2012 two CD set. Merrily We Roll Along, composer-lyricist Stephen Sondheim and bookwriter George Furth's first collaboration following their landmark Company, opened on Broadway in 1981 to some of the most savage reviews of Sondheim's career, closing after a run of only 16 performances. But fitting for a show that runs in reverse, the end was only the beginning of the story. Sondheim moved on to success with James Lapine on Sunday in the Park With George; Furth then encouraged Lapine to take a look at the show, beginning a major overhaul of Merrily by Sondheim and Furth that lasted over 20 years. In 2011, with the work complete, original orchestrator Jonathan Tunick was brought in to score the new songs; he ended up reorchestrating the entire score, giving it a consistency and clarity he felt it deserved. In 2012, New York City Center's Encores! series premiered this new version of Merrily We Roll Along.

5.0 out of 5 stars The new standard September 5, 2012
Format:MP3 Music|Verified Purchase
I've been listening to the Original Broadway Cast recording of Merrily We Roll Along for 20 years or more. I've bought other recordings of the show, but never listened to them more than 2 or 3 times. The performances never measured up to the original, and the new songs never came to life for me - "Th Blob" etc. were unwelcome distractions from the show I knew and loved.

But this recording has earned a pride of place next to the original. I've listened to it again and again since buying it, and it's made me appreciate the changes, and embrace the new performances. Plus the crisp, clear production is miles above the low, muddy RCA CD I've been playing for all those years. I can't recommend it enough to fans of the show.

5.0 out of 5 stars A treat. July 10, 2012

Great album from the Encores! series. As it includes parts of the book it is the first recording that actually could be heared as a whole. The songs are gorgeous and the performances very good and credible. The only but is the new arragement, but I think that it is a matter of time to get used to it. One of Sondheim's masterpieces, a glorious flop!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful CD! July 13, 2012

This is a great CD - the full orchestra sounds fantastic. Everyone sings beautifully. In some cases, the singing is better on this CD than when it was sung live. Listening to the CD really feels like you seeing the show again, because it includes a lot of dialogue. I saw the show (but didnt have a great seat) so now I feel like I have a seat in the orchestra!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Phoenix of musicals July 19, 2012
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I fell in love with Stephen Sondheim's and George Furth's "Merrily We Roll Along" when I first heard the original-cast recording from 1981. I thought, "How could it miss with a score this brilliant?" Then I read the story of how the original Broadway production was beset by problems that had nothing to do with the music.

I give Sondheim and Furth great credit for their persistence over the next 27 years in looking for ways to make such a great idea (telling the story backwards, reinforcing the irony in its theme of friendship destroyed by ambition) connect with the audience. The answer lay in making the characters more sympathetic and understandable, even if one disagreed with their decisions.

Now the Encores concert series has brought the show back to vibrant life with this terrific production, and PS Classics has given the world a first-rate recording of the score, spread generously over two CDs so we can hear lots of dialogue, giving the songs context. Jonathan Tunick, the greatest Broadway orchestrator of all time, has thoughtfully reconsidered his original charts and made some adjustments to better reflect the dramatic nature of the story.

This is the best cast recording of the revised version of "Merrily..." I have ever heard. The show is thrilling and heartbreaking by turns, and it cries out for consideration by theater companies all over the world.

5.0 out of 5 stars Worthwhile June 27, 2013

Sondheim needs to be recorded so that we can go back time and time again to properly absorb the sophistication of his music and lyrics and this does not disappoint

5.0 out of 5 stars The best performance of the best Sondheim score. Period February 16, 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I saw the live production three times, and I have a copy of the full piano score. The work is a complete arc of magic. This performance is my favorite of the several that I have on CD. Rob Berman and the orchestra are amazing. Broadway simply can't afford such an orchestra anymore, but I'm glad that Encores! still manages. The cast is very strong -- amazingly so -- but more importantly they are an ensemble that brings Sondheim's brilliance to life. Character, music, lyrics, and that deep, almost painful insight into human nature that only theater can illuminate -- this score and this performance has it all.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent November 24, 2012
Format:MP3 Music|Verified Purchase
Highly recommended for any Sondheim lover!! The only complaint I have is I was a little disappointed with Lin-Manuel Miranda as Charley. I am a big fan of his. Loved him in "In the Heights" but I felt his voice just wasn't strong enough. Especially when compared to the rest of the cast. However I still give it 5 stars.

Yes, illogical, illogical, illogical, but hot hot hot. But let's face it, you're not going to buy it if Andy Dick and Jim Parsons were the stars, would you?
