And that's really sad. Because anything set in 1884 United States (this one's in Georgia) is of immediate interest to me. LOVE the era.
MISS MERRIWEATHER'S MARRIAGE is 24 pages long (minus the intro and extra pages). As typical for the Victorian era, Miss Merriweather's father has decided she's dithered around long enough and it's time for her to marry. He's conveniently brought his choice of young men for her to choose from, and choose, she will!
I found too much confusion in the opening pages as many, many characters were introduced all at once and I found myself guessing "is THIS the hero?" a few times before the story finally identified one of the guys as the Hero. There were redeeming qualities, of course-- fun secondary character in her grandmother whose opinion seems to have some weight (but not with Merriweather himself), the setting was rich with sensory detail (oppressive Georgia heat in summertime, many layers of women's clothing), rules governing fine southern gentility in the Victorian era).
All in all, not a waste of reading time, but sadly, did not captivate me. First in a series books (even novellas like this one) are meant to captivate readers and compel them to buy the next in the series (if not ALL) of them. Sadly, this one made it easy (for me) to pass on the rest.
Bummer. I really wanted to like it.
Finally she meets an acceptable man. Will he let her be herself and live a full life? Or will they clash, both independent and strong willed. The story tells the consequences of her choice and how she became who she really wanted to be.
Miss Merriweather’s story helps today’s women see how far they’ve come in being full citizens of their world, with the freedoms and choices we enjoy today.
This is a story that is set in 1844 and a family is pushing for their daughter to get married regardless what she wants frankly. Miss Millicent Merriweather is a woman who wishes she had more freedom to do things that she would rather be doing than a Georgian flower of some sort. She does enjoy bucking what is proper, but at the same time she knows when she can get away with something. At this point she is trying to stay out of a marriage she does not want.
Can things change though when someone understands her a little better? Can love grow in such a short time? These are things that are quickly asked and answered. I would have dearly loved this story to be longer for it was far too short, but I am looking forward to reading The Secret Lives of Will Tucker series that is for sure now to see how the generations to come will be.
Winthrop is an unusual man who catches her eye, but she's not sure what to make of him. When he shows an interest in who she really is, Millicent has to re-evaluate her plans.
This story is a prequel to the author's series, The Secret Lives of Will Tucker. The story was even shorter than I thought, consisting of four chapters: The Race, The Chase, The Hunt and The Capture. The story takes up 3/4 of the book and the remainder is a preview of the first book in the series, Flora's Wish. The second book in the series is called Millie's Treasure. The final book, which is due out February 2014, is called Sadie's Secret.
The series looks to involve the Pinkerton's and a criminal named Will Tucker. This story was very short, making it hard to make a fully informed decision, but the characters were entertaining enough and I look forward to reading more.
The Secret Lives of Will Tucker Series Book 0.5
This is a very short read about how Millicent Victoria Elizabeth Merriweather meets Captain Winthrop Brimm. Millicent would prefer to be riding horses and other such endeavors but her father insists on her marrying. Thanks to her place in society, it seems enjoying a good fast run on a horse is not part of what is acceptable. Thank goodness she has found a man who appreciates her and her love for horses.
Brimmfield Estate is the pride and joy of Winthrop and he plans on ensuring that it stays in the family for many years in the future. This is just the beginning of the story that continues in the next three books: Flora's Wish, Millie's Treasure and Sadie's Secret.
