Editorial Reviews

As Christmas 1969 beckoned, Jimi Hendrix, bassist Billy Cox, and drummer Buddy Miles engaged in extensive rehearsals for their highly anticipated appearances at the Fillmore East in New York. To mark the occasion in his own inimitable fashion, Jimi readied this special medley of holiday favorites to celebrate both Christmas and the dawning of a new decade. It by no means should be considered a polished studio recording made to Hendrix's exacting specifications. This is a glimpse of Jimi simply having fun in the company of close friends. As an added bonus, also included is Jimi's playful "Three Little Bears." This track was recorded with the Experience at the Record Plant in May 1968 during sessions for Electric Ladyland.

Biography

Widely recognized as one of the most creative and influential musicians of the 20th century, Jimi Hendrix pioneered the explosive possibilities of the electric guitar. Hendrix's innovative style of combining fuzz, feedback and controlled distortion created a new musical form. Because he was unable to read or write music, it is nothing short of remarkable that Jimi Hendrix's meteoric ... Read more in Amazon's Jimi Hendrix Store

If you're a fan of Hendrix, it's nice to have this little rarity on CD, as the original promotional vinyl is long out of print. The addition of the extended medley is very nice as well, as I believe it is longer than any previous version in circulation. If you are more of a casual fan, though, this release is probably not for you.
As for Three Little Bears, it certainly seems out of place on a Christmas release. My guess is that the Hendrix family is making good on their promise to eventually re-issue all of the studio tracks that were originally released on the LPs War Heroes, Cry of Love and Rainbow Bridge. The song probably isn't "good enough" to be re-issued on a studio compilation, so it has been tacked onto a single release. Again, nice to have if only to round out your collection, but the track sounds better in its original place alongside other outtakes found on the War Heroes LP/CD.
Lastly, the inclusion of a photo of Jimi in a Santa suit on the inside cover, originally taken for New Musical Express magazine in England to promote the December 1967 release of Axis: Bold As Love, was a nice touch.

This 16 minute CD, mastered by Eddie Kramer and George Marino, is a re-release (with "new" artwork from the original release) of the 1999 CD. The '99 release booklet had a color photo of Hendrix with white beard and a Christmas hat, on the cover. The back showed Hendrix in the same costume holding the album cover for "Axis: Bold As Love". The photos were done in conjunction with the UK music paper "Record Mirror", to advertise that album. For those who don't own the 1972 "War Heroes" release, the song "Three Little Bears" will be of special interest. This track features the original band in 1968. The "Little Drummer...Syne" tracks are from 1969, and feature the rhythm section of Billy Cox-bass, and Buddy Miles-drums. These relatively unpolished tracks show Hendrix having fun in the studio, and give a bit of insight into what he did in the studio at different times while recording his own music. While this "new" artwork is okay, the Christmas/Santa Claus beard and hat cover was a really nice touch, and in keeping with the spirit of Christmas.

This CD is a brief little snippet of Hendrix and the Band of Gypsys at play whilst rehearsing for their immortal Fillmore shows of December 31, 1969 and January 1, 1970. Thirty years later, it's still a gas to hear Jimi's huge throbbing guitar sound tear into Little Drummer Boy, Silent Night, Taps, and Auld Lang Syne. The first version was later released by Reprise as a promo single. The second, "extended" version is really the first with a longer, more elaborate ending grafted on from another take. Very nice and it sounds like they had fun recording it. Jimi's variations on these chestnuts got my jazz piano-playing mother in-law (who would run from Purple Haze in a hearbeat) listening closely and saying "interesting" as she tapped her foot. Three Little Bears, previously unissued on any U.S. CD, rounds out the disc for no particular reason. It's a harmless little ditty recorded during the Electric Lady Land sessions that sounds as if Jimi wrote it about ten minutes before the session and is already forgetting the lyrics. Bound to make you smile if you're not a grinch.

Not bad. I would say that this item is for hard-core Jimi fans like myself. An interesting oddity - nice to have on CD. I have the original on vinyl but don't dare play it for fear of scratching it - now I can pop in the CD whenever I want.

The cover in question is a painting by Abdul Mati Klarwein whose work was used for Miles Davis's "Bitches Brew," "Live/Evil" etc., Santana's "Abraxas," Earth, Wind & Fire's "Last Days...," Jerry Garcia/Howard Wales and others quite extensively in the late '60s - early '70s, so the use of his work for this is very appropriate. If you google "klarwein hendrix" in images, you can see a photo of Hendrix visiting Klarwein's New York loft.

The music is a rehearsal and should be appreciated as such.

Merry Christmas, folks.

This CD features two versions of Jimi Hendrix and the Band of Gypsies jamming on Christmas songs. It is a loose jam session where they play instrumental versions of "Little Drummer Boy", "Silent Night", "Auld Lang Syne" and "Taps" (although "Taps" is not listed on the CD). The extended version here features more of "Silent Night" tacked on the end, that seems to be grafted from a different take. If you are a fan of Jimi's feedback drenched guitar playing, you should get a kick out of this. The other song here is the Electric Ladyland outtake "Three Little Bears". As Jimi himself says during the song, it has silly lyrics, but his guitar playing is great. It is an inconsequential, but fun song.

Geez you guys! Quit your whining! The cover this go around is from the original 12" vinyl promotional copy that circulated in 1979 courtesy Alan Douglas & Reprise Records. The Jimi as Santa cover was cute, but now you get the rare promo cover.

As for the music on this CD, it's as much fun as it was the first time I heard it in '79. It's just not Christmas without this tune on my Rockin' Christmas compilation.

Wasn't this released already?
Maybe this is just the re-release reflecting the transfer of catalog from RCA/Universal to Sony/BMG/Columbia?
