The story is sweet and unremarkable, but the Southwest setting, however authentic, is a nice change from most holiday books. Catalano's illustrations are carefully executed. You can forget How The Grinch Stole Christmas and The Polar Express. Merry Christmas, Old Armadillo is destined to be a Christmas Classic. With warmth, instead of the Grinch's nastiness, Brimner has concocted a tale that grips the young listeners in our house on each re-telling. Its message, though subtle, reminds us not to forgot our old friends--perhaps those grandparents and great grandparents exiled to Sun City. A winner to be shared no matter the season.
