3.0 out of 5 stars Mariah Merry Christmas CD
She has a beautiful voice but do not need the high screamy notes in the songs, so my husband and I were very disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars This album stands among the classics, November 23, 1999
This review is from: Merry Christmas (Audio CD)
I own some classic Christmas albums like Nat King Cole for example, and now, Mariah Carey's Merry Christmas. It has the catchy Christmas standards like "Joy to the World" and "Santa Clause Is Coming to Town" and there are great original tracks like "All I Want For Christmas Is You" and "Miss You Most (On Christmas Time)"----this album covers all the basic ingredients that takes to become a standard classic. Her flawless and incredibly touching vocal performance on "Oh Holly Night" sends chills down your spine and the Mariah-penned "Jesus Born On This Day" is a beautiful hymn that uses a boys' choir, an incredible production. Although I do feel that her attempt at singing gospel is not very convincing, I still find the collection of songs irresistible. When you're by the fire and contemplating your Christmas tree with a loved one, put MC's Merry Christmas on your CD player and cuddle, it doesn't get better than that.

5.0 out of 5 stars Christmas ... oh what a wonderful time, September 30, 2001
By
This review is from: Merry Christmas (Audio CD)
Christmas is one of the most magical times of the year. I think for everyone, whether you are particularly religious or not, it holds special sentiments of being with loved ones and being overtly happy. At the same time, however, there are always those more serious, religious, thanksgiving overtones. Mariah's Christmas CD - which I feel is the best Christmas album ever recorded - brings together these feelings wonderfully.

The fun tracks make up about half the record. The first single, "All I Want For Christmas Is You", is undoubtedly one of Mariah's best tracks, dancey but restrained enough so that even the "olds" will enjoy it. Mariah's beautiful voice glides over the melody like silk, but swooping and diving in true diva-style. "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)" is a lovely, Motown-styled Christmas classic, whilst her rendition of "Santa Claus Is Coming To Town" turns a cheesy Christmas tune into something really esquisite. The other "fun" track on this collection is her reading of Three Dog Night's "Joy To The World". Her vocal stylings here are superb, and there is nothing more uplifting than a good Christmas carol delivered in true Christmas cheer.

The ballads are also a delight. Mariah's self-penned "Miss You Most (At Christmas Time)" is my favourite Mariah ballad, and not necessarily one which should be relegated to Christmas times only. Her interpretations of "Silent Night", "Hark The Herald Angels Sing" and "O Holy Night" are nicely restrained, but she really shines on the gospel stomper "Jesus, Oh What A Wonderful Child".

Do not hesitate to pick this disc up. It has been in frequent rotation at Christmas time in my household since 1994, whereas many other Christmas discs I have purchased are played one year then stacked at the bottom of my CD pile never to be seen again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing Christmas collection!, November 25, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Merry Christmas (Audio CD)
This cd is one of Mariah's best cd, her voice is on top condition, and one of the best xmas collection ever. The songs are:

1. Silent Night (9.5/10) - Mariah does a calm vesion, and it's very good.

2. All I Want For Christmas Is You (9.5/10)The classic mariah holyday song, everyone likes this one.

3. O Holy Night (10/10)- Amazing Vocals, Best Version of this song ever.

4. Christmas (Baby Please Come Home) (8.5/10) - Great Arrangement

5. Miss You Most (At Christmas Time) (9/10) - Tradicional MAriah Romantic Ballad but is Xmas Related. The Great thing here is the simple but amazing arrangement and her awesome voice, again.

6. Joy To The World (7.5/10) - unfortunately Mariah put a beat that doesn't fill here, but in the end ít becomes good.

7. Jesus Born On This Day (8.5/10) - touching song, children singing, calm, great.

8. Santa Claus Is Comin' To Town (9.5/10) - another classic song that mariah made the best version ever.

9. Hark! The Herald Angels Sing / Gloria (In Excelsis Deo)(9/10)- great vocals of Mariah and all the background singers.

10. Jesus What A Wonderful Child (9.5/10)- great gospel side of Mariah.

Overall, amazing. As someone here wrote, Mariah sings gospel very well, and should have more gospel influences on her regular records.

5.0 out of 5 stars THE DIVA shows how it's done, December 2, 2003
By

This review is from: Merry Christmas (Audio CD)
Mariah Carey's "Merry Christmas" album is everything it's cracked up to be! This cd delivers 10 amazing tracks from the living legend. Her voice catapults you into a heavenly soprano stratosphere (i.e. Silent Night) and warms you with her rich alto rendition of O Holy Night.
Mariah penned three songs on this album, two of which have already been covered! "All I Want For Christmas Is You" is already deemed a classic amongst society and will most definately carry on through the years, and her beautiful gospel song "Jesus, Born On This Day" has been covered by Christian Music group Avalon.
You may debate whether to pick this one up or Whitney Houston's "One Wish" but let me tell you. Whitney's cd feels like something's missing to me. While she struggles to hit the notes in some songs (i.e. the ending of her rendition of O Holy Night), Mariah freely soars at the ending, leaving chills down your spine. Not to mention, Mariah worked very hard on this project, producing all 10 songs, writing 3 of them. This cd is more intimate and personal than Whitneys. It wasn't made to accept Mariah back into society, it was made to enjoy the warmth of Christmas.
Sure, Mariah has had her hard times, but her faith in Jesus has pulled her through and get ready for her next album! She has been working really hard and her voice has never sounded as powerful! I know, I've been to a concert recently! Thank you Mariah! You ARE THE DIVA!

5.0 out of 5 stars Mariah's Merry Little Christmas Now !!!, December 9, 2006

(TOP 100 REVIEWER)    (HALL OF FAME REVIEWER)    (VINE VOICE)
This review is from: Merry Christmas (Audio CD)
Mariah Carey possesses great talent; Amazon correctly notes that she has a multi-octave singing range. On this CD Mariah delivers one great performance after another with every song she sings. Her voice is rich, vibrant and full of energy. She doesn't need to prove herself because she is known to have great talent; but her vocal gymnastics on this album highlight her talents yet again. This CD proves it.

The CD starts out with the beautiful traditional song entitled "Silent Night." Mariah performs this flawlessly; and she is ably assisted by a wonderful choir and a sensitive musical arrangement. The CD then takes a quick turn to a more secular, pop music flavored ballad entitled "All I Want For Christmas Is You." The mixing is superb and the choir supports Mariah well. The beat is excellent and "All I Want For Christmas Is You" deserves recognition as an instant Christmastime classic.

Other religious songs on this album include "O Holy Night;" "Jesus Born On This Day;" "Hark! The Angels Sing/Gloria (In Excelsis Deo)" and the gospel ballad "Jesus Oh What A Wonderful Child." All of these songs are done to perfection. The gospel song "Jesus Oh What A Wonderful Child" is an excellent choice to end this album as it has a strong, catchy beat and the message is appropriately religious. Moreover, the gospel choir on this last track is positively electric.

The album boasts two more love ballads: "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)" expresses a woman's longing for a lost love especially during the holiday season. "Miss You Most (At Christmas Time)" deals with the same issue but expresses even more melancholy with Mariah's incredible voice and its flawless musical arrangement. Excellent!

The liner notes are excellent. The songs credits and lyrics are there for you; and there are numerous beautiful photos of Mariah and a man dressed up as Santa Claus. Very sweet!

I highly recommend this CD for fans of both secular and religious Christmastime music. Mariah's fans will never get enough of this terrific CD not just because it's Mariah singing but also for the several musical arrangements Mariah personally did for this album. Fans of R&B/Soul Christmas music will also be delighted!

5.0 out of 5 stars Bravo to the Spirit Here!, December 22, 2003
This review is from: Merry Christmas (Audio CD)
"Merry Christmas" has something for everyone. I highly recommend it. What makes me play this cd every year besides the amazing production, instrumentation and background vocals of the Price sisters, Kelly and Shanrae; and Melonie Daniels is Mariah's rendition of "O Holy Night." It's my all-time favorite Christmas song and Mariah interprets it with such passion, spirit and heart that it overwhelms me every time, humbling me to want to (and often do) fall on my knees as I remember Jesus' humble birth and great Love and sacrifice for me. Every single person named inside this cd or that had Anything at all to do with this album I sincerely thank you with my whole heart. This cd will be with me forever and it is obvious this is a group effort. Bravo to you all!

I love all of the religious songs best on this album: (however, all the songs are great!)
* SILENT NIGHT--perfect opening, with whispy vocals and lots of trills of Mariah that are her trademark to me. No other vocalist has ever impressed me as much as Mariah does with this feature of her singing.
* O HOLY NIGHT--what can I say? Perfect in every way!
* JOY TO THE WORLD--Woo Hoo! THIS IS JOY! ^_^ I believe Heaven and Nature IS singing along with this song! Perfect ad infinitum.
* JESUS BORN ON THIS DAY--backed by a precious children's choir. Splendid keyboards, orchestral programming and digital and synth. It's all these intricate details that make this cd spectacular!
* HARK! THE HERALD ANGELS SINGS/GLORIA (In Excelsis Deo)--What can I say? The highest praise which must be heard and approved of by the Angels on High!
* JESUS, OH WHAT A WONDERFUL CHILD--what a perfect ending! Ties it all together. Leaves me breathless!

I believe this to be her Greatest Musical Effort and I sincerely appreciate and am touched to the core by everyone's spirit and outpouring of their heart's love for God! May MERRY CHRISTMAS encourage and edify you as you remember Christ the King and the love of your family and friends, His gifts to you. May your cup overflow with The Joy that only He gives this Christmas and throughout the New Year. Draw near to Him and He will draw near to you...
Soar!

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Christmas album. EVER, November 25, 2003

I don't know what the reviewer was thinking when they wrote that whitney's "One Wish" is better. im a huge whitney houston fan, but OH MY GOD, there's no comparison between these 2 albums. Mariah absolutely nails the christmas feeling on this album, her voice is stunning. I love the mix of traditional songs and her own writing. Apparently this album recently overtook elvis's xmas cd to become the Biggest Selling Christmas Album of all time!! every year it comes out again, and every year it's a huge hit. again. people who hate Mariah all go out and buy it. and trust me there's a reason for that. if u buy this album, u WON'T be disappointed, altho it will probably leave you wanting more. (also recommend Celine's album "These Are Special Times", Whitney's "One Wish", and the Ally McBeal Christmas album).

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Christmas Album You Can Buy, October 3, 2003
By
This review is from: Merry Christmas (Audio CD)
This album is one of Mariah's best collection of songs. It's veiled as a Christmas album yet features some of her best vocal performances. This came out in '94 at the heighth of Mariah's career. She was coming off of the "Music Box" album which was the biggest of her career. It consists of classic Christmas carols (Silent Night, O Holy Night, Hark the Herald Angels Sing) and Mariah originals (All I Want For Christmas Is You, Miss You Most, Jesus Born On this Day.) "All I Want For Christmas Is You" is classic Mariah carey. Upbeat, light-hearted, and fun, this is the kinda song you blast. It ranks right up there with "Dreamlover" and "Fantasy." One listen to "O Holy Night" leaves you dumbfounded. Mariah puts so much emotion into the song and I love the high note at the most dramatic part of the song. No one has EVER sang this song better. "Miss You Most" is a beautiful ballad. "Jesus, O what A wonderful Child" will make you feel like you're in a Baptist church. This song proves what an incredible gospel singer Mariah can be.

Strip Mariah of her image, her sexy clothes, and numerous pop/ R&B hits and this album showcases two important things. Mariah can sing like no other and has a strong grasp on her faith. This si the best holiday album money can buy. Whether you like mariah or not, there's no denying this album and all it stands for.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Christmas Marvel, June 22, 2005
This review is from: Merry Christmas (Audio CD)
My oh my oh my. Someone wake me up me from this pearl enveloped dream consisting of pure fascination and enjoyment. Miss Mariah Carey explodes onto the scene with a flawless effort, spectacularly sung with astonishing vocals. As a music reviewer i must say in all my years have i never been so tremendously impressed. Mariahs renditions of such songs as O holy night, and silent night are startling, while her executions of joy to the world, and jesus born on this day will leave ur spine shivering with excitment and unable to contain itself. The superior range and honey coated power of this singer, on this album, is unsurpassed. She has deservedly claimed herself as queen of the Christmas albums, she is Mariah Carey.

5.0 out of 5 stars Treat yourself to a nice Christmas gift..., December 21, 2002
This review is from: Merry Christmas (Audio CD)
This is the BEST Christmas ablum EVER! Mariah mixes her takes on traditional songs and new (and great) songs that she wrote. It has fun songs that you can even dance around to, and more traditional, slower Christmas tunes. I like this CD because, first of all, Mariah is the greatest singer in all the land, and because it has kind of a Gospel flare to it! The second track (All I Want For Christmas Is You) and the last track (Jesus What A Wonderful Child) are the best songs. The last track is awesome! "Jesus! Jesus! Jesus! Jesus!" All I Want For Christmas Is You is also a wonderful song. This truly is the best Christmas CD ever! You'll love it. Even if you aren't a Mariah Carey fan, you'll love this CD. It's a treasured part of any CD collection. You won't regret this purchase! I guarantee it! So, treat yourself to a nice present and buy this CD! You deserve it! ENJOY!
