More About the Author

Laura Numeroff grew up in Brooklyn, with her mother, father and two older sisters. Her house was filled with books, art, music and folk dancing.

She attended Pratt Institute and graduated with a degree in communications and a contract for her first children's book, AMY FOR SHORT, published in 1975 by Macmillan.

A New York Times best-selling children's book author, Laura is best known for the series based on her book IF YOU GIVE A MOUSE A COOKIE. First printed in 1985, "Mouse" is in its 40th printing. The fourth book in the series, IF YOU TAKE A MOUSE TO THE MOVIES was on the New York Times Children's Best Seller list for five months- nine weeks at number one.

Publisher's Weekly listed IF YOU TAKE A MOUSE TO THE MOVIES as the number two book for children in 2000 (Harry Potter was number one) and at one point, Laura had three books on the New York Times Bestseller List in the same week.

In 2000, IF YOU GIVE A PIG A PANCAKE was featured on the Oprah show three times, and was recommended by Oprah's first kids' book club, as well as being noted as Oprah's favorite children's book of the year on her Christmas show. In addition, the series has sold over 4.5 million copies, been printed in fourteen languages, and won the prestigious Quill Award in the picture book category.

She has also visited over 100 elementary schools and has been a speaker at teacher conferences around the country.

Customer Reviews

A great book for the kiddies during the holiday season.

I thought this would be a story line similar to "If you give a mouse a cookie" but, it wasn't that at all.

Very cute stories and durable books for my toddler to carry around.

I thought this would be a story line similar to "If you give a mouse a cookie" but, it wasn't that at all. There is no story at all. It's just each page counting from 1-10 with that number of objects on each page. This is my favorite author of all times but this book REALLY fell short!

If you love the "If you give a mouse a cookie" books - this is not it! It is pretty much a very simple counting book. Not what I was hoping to show my 4 and 5 year olds. It is not very long and the pages are very sturdy, so it would be great for a toddler. My boys were not that impressed with it and neither was I.

We love the "If you give" books and thought this would be a great addition to our library. I was very disappointed when it arrived and I went to read it to my kids. There isn't a story. It's just very few words per page and a very basic counting book. Would not recommend it in the future.

The Turkeybird Speaks(My 3 year old son):
"Soldiers! Rockets! 5...6...7. Counting and the Mouse from some of my favorites like The Best Mouse Cookie makes this so much fun. I'm really just more impressed that Mouse thought to make sure to put Rockets on his Christmas tree. Great minds think alike. Although, I think I would have also added some tractors as well."

Mom's Two Cents:
"I love this series of books, not just the Mouse but all of the animals. When I was young my own mother actually went to one of the first book signings I can remember and it was for the original If You Give A Mouse A Cookie book. Out of all the books though, this is not my favorite. It seemed a little basic, but if your little one is just learning to count this could make it very fun. The Turkeybird really does get into all of the fun items Mouse adds to the tree. I'm not so sure that this would be a great book for a four year old, as I expect the Turkeybird to grow out of this after this Christmas season. All in all a fun book for little counters to have some fun learning to incorporate numbers into everyday activities."

I have seen a lot of negative reviews for this book. I can understand the reason for the negative feedback. The "If you give a..." series are wonderful children's books. They are witty and fun to read. Merry Christmas, Mouse! is a completely different book, with a different style. It is more appropriate for younger children or as a book for beginning-readers. With that in mind, it's a nice Christmas book to read to children over the holiday season.
