Mariah sings some classic Christmas songs with great emotion and a fabulous voice. I particularly love All I Want For Christmas!!!! The best!

This album may not even be 20 years old, but it's already a classic! Mariah really knows how to get into that Christmas spirit through her music and she created an instant classic with "All I Want For Christmas Is You."

Sitting out in the snow back in December Of 1994 when I was only 17 years old out in the country in Urbana Mo I went to Skyline High School where at the time was Christmas Vacation and at that time when my mom and StepDad was going through a Divorce and mom told us that we had to move to Bolivar Mo. and mom could not Afford Christmas that year so I went out in the Woods to Find a Christmas Tree because we could not afford one so we made popcorn for ornements and the paper Strimmers that you connect together and put around the tree. we Surprised mom with the tree but mom started to cry because she new that she could not afford any Christmas Presents that year so we decided to take down the tree because we did not want mom upset. That Previous year mom gave me for Christmas a Walkman and Madonna Immaculate Collection So this year I had Nothing and my two brothers and two Sisters Excepted it because Family Comes First and Christmas is not all about Presents or a Tree its all about the lord and Family!!! So I Decided one night when it was Christmas Eve when everyone was a sleep to go outside when it was snowing and there was already snow on the ground from previous Days I took my walkman and put in Mariah Carey's Merry Christmas Album That I recieved from Secret Santa From a Classmate at school and I set there in the snow I never heard such Beauty in Music Before. As I sit and Listen to Christmas Music I looked up at the stars and the Moon Letting the snow hit my face and I felt In my Heart that with Mariah's Music in my heart and the love of the lord, my family will make it through. One of Mariah's best. It's an album that I go to all year long and not only at Christmas. I highly recommend it!

Few commercial Christmas albums really appeal to me - too many of them mangle the traditional classics I love, especially the hymns, with all sorts of fancy modern sounds that ring hollow to my ears, and, loving the traditional songs so much, few modern Christmas tunes manage to win me over. Ever since its release, though, Mariah Carey's Merry Christmas CD remains a perennial Christmas favorite of mine. Mariah's vocal talent puts her head and shoulders above every female vocalist out there, and she injects true feeling and spirit into every song she sings. On this album, she combines the new with the old, making this a Christmas CD that almost everyone can love.

Like many, I was drawn to this CD after hearing the song All I Want For Christmas Is You; I believe it's the best secular Christmas song since Elvis' Blue Christmas. I had to buy the album for this one song alone, but I was also very anxious to hear what Mariah would do with traditional hymns such as Oh Holy Night - my pick for the greatest Christmas song ever written. Many a soprano shies away from truly hitting the high notes at the end of Oh Holy Night, and given Mariah's vocal range, I felt confident she would do the song justice. I was right, as this is one of the best versions of Oh Holy Night I've ever heard. Mariah's voice is equally angelic on Joy to the World, Hark the Herald Angels Sing, and a properly subdued Silent Night. Jesus Oh What A Wonderful Child is a song I was less familiar with, but it makes for a stunning conclusion to an album that does pay real heed to the reason for the season.

Besides All I Want For Christmas Is You, Mariah co-wrote two other songs on the album: Miss You Most (At Christmas Time) and Jesus Born on This Day. The latter is an especially beautiful song that expresses the true meaning of Christmas. She also throws in an exceedingly fun version of Santa Claus is Coming to Town (and, thankfully, I can now think of Mariah rather than Bruce Springsteen whenever I hear this song). The perfect complement to All I Want For Christmas Is You, though, is Christmas (Baby Please Come Home).

Put it all together and you have a true modern Christmas classic featuring a wonderful mix of religious and secular songs that radiate both the fun as well as the serious aspects of the Christmas season. Anyone who loves Christmas - and Christmas music in particular - really should make this CD an annual part of his/her holiday celebration.

Please do not be misled by any review that leads you to believe that this album is about "booty" The album in no way misses nor disrespects what Christmas is all about. It mixes traditional religious songs with spirited and soulful modern Christmas music. Mariah's versions of Silent Night, O Holy Night and Hark the Herlad Angels Sing/Gloria are breath taking traditional versions. Jesus Born On This Day, while not an original classic, has a traditional feel. Jesus What A Wonderful Child is gospel infused and brings you right inside the church. And yes, All I Want for Christmas is You and Christmas(Baby Please Come home) are fun, catchy secular Christmas songs. What is wrong with that? They are great songs that in no way direspect the true message of Christmas. This album is a winner. Great job Mariah! Merry Christmas to all!!!

I celebrate Christmas very minimally AND I don't fully care for Mariah's work normally, but I still had to write and give this album respect!

I will be first in line to say that Mariah (especially at the point in her career when this album was recorded) has one of the best voices one could ever hope to hear or be gifted with, BUT over the course of her discography, I find that I generally don't like her choice of material, and much of it is overproduced and oversung. (I think that's what people are referring to when they say they don't like her; I fail to see how one could claim her voice is not excellent.)

This album, though, is well-tailored to her voice, and a lot of it is gospel-ish, which I found I liked. It suits the material and her voice, and I'd like to hear a full gospel album by her.

In particular, her 'O Holy Night' is, strangely, my favorite version of the song. The vocal range and power displayed is ABSOLUTELY ASTONISHING (any singer who listens will understand and be awed), and there is an unquantifiable element of audible joy in the song. Is it joy at the subject matter, the thought of Jesus? Maybe. For myself, it sounds like the sheer joy of someone lost in the grip of their gift, like the joy you can see in an Olympic athlete excelling at his sport, or a horse taking joy in the wind in its mane knowing it sure can RUN.

Perhaps it's both, but either way, it's a great album, and unless you just hate every single thing about Mariah Carey, you'll find there's at least several songs on this album for you.

I like Mariah Carey okay, but I'm not a super fan or anything. And I think that this album was inspired! It's probably my favorite Christmas album of all time.

It's easy to hate Christmas songs as they are played-to-death each season. But, "All I want for Christmas is You" is one of the worst. It ranks down there with "Santa Baby", and its infamy owes as much to its stale genre as it does to Ms. Carey's singing style. I mean, she's great for the dance floor, but Christmas music should not sound bootylicious.
