3.0 out of 5 stars It was an OK read
This was an interesting read. It wasn't ground breaking or epic, but it was still enjoyable chick lit.

As a main character Lauren isnt totally lovable, but I get her perspective. She might be a totally wonderful person, but she is always being held in contrast to her husband who is more beloved by everyone. She cant help but look bitter or angry by comparison...

This romance was a quick and easy read. There was some humor in it as well as family relationship issues. I enjoyed the main characters and felt they were as developed as they could be in a short novel. The story has a predictable ending, but it was an ending I wanted and left me feeling satisfied. Although there was one main formatting problem in that sections of text were indented for no reason and there were several typos, they did not interfere with an enjoyable read. I look forward to more from this author.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fun lighthearted read, February 28, 2010

I really enjoyed this book, it's a good lighthearted fun romance. Lauren's dad is annoying, in that well-meaning "I'm just doing it for your best interests" kind of way, and you can't help but like him. As you might expect from a contemporary romance, Lauren herself has an epiphany or two along the way, but it's all written in such a way that nothing feels forced. And there's nothing too terribly angst-y about the story, which can get really old and it's nice not to have to deal with if you're looking for something escapist and feel-good. This is a good book to spend a few hours with and come out satisified in the end.

4.0 out of 5 stars She doesn't love him--or does she?, April 2, 2010

This review is from: The Merry-Go-Round, a romantic comedy (Kindle Edition)
I enjoyed this book. Author Donna Fasano has done a fine job detailing heroine Lauren Flynn's problem life. First, after her husband Greg manages to nearly bankrupt them, Lauren files for divorce and her elderly father has to move in with her. Then in her divorce settlement Lauren is awarded a merry-go-round that she will have to refurbish before she can sell it. Meanwhile, she's busy with her legal career.

I like the way the author wove interesting legal cases in with Lauren's day to day life with her hypochondriac dad. Initially I had trouble warming up to Lauren, though. Her anger with Greg came out every time she was near him and she behaved badly. From her point of view he had lied and put them in a financial bind through poor business decisions. Yet Greg always seemed kind and thoughtful, and I had a hard time picturing him as being that bad. After Lauren makes some mistakes of her own, especially by dating someone unsuitable, she starts to realize that she shares a big part of the blame for her marriage failure. The merry-go-round also played an important role in bringing Lauren to the point where she knows what she really wants out of life. The newly humbled Lauren reaches the right conclusions and the ending is a happy one.

The Merry-Go-Round was a great easy read and I would recommend this to others, you won't be disappointed! I felt that I was able to easily identify and connect with the characters, especially Lauren's Dad. HA! I could see this book be adapted for the big screen.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful and Entertaining!, March 2, 2010
This review is from: The Merry-Go-Round, a romantic comedy (Kindle Edition)
The Merry-Go-Round is a book that I'd be pleased to recommend to friends. Laura's story is well-written with character's that I believe that most readers could relate to, especially her Dad. I loved his character. A great fun book for the romance fans.

4.0 out of 5 stars Funny, December 18, 2011
This review is from: The Merry-Go-Round, a romantic comedy (Kindle Edition)
This book has a wonderful heroine, some great characters, and it pretty well written (except for a few small editing and formatting issues). I would have liked a bit more comedy, but each person has their own perfect ratio of comedy to romance. I still think it was fun and worth the time it took to read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Charming romantic comedy, June 30, 2010
This review is from: The Merry-Go-Round, a romantic comedy (Kindle Edition)
This charming romantic comedy has been written by an award-winning romance author - and it shows. The story-telling is excellent, the dialogue natural, and the characters are well-rounded and engaging. The light, witty writing style is the kind that takes years to perfect.

I could see where this story was likely to go but not quite how we would get there. I loved the humour in it - both the exchanges between the main character, Lauren, and her friend and assistant Norma Jean, and the funny set pieces as we were introduced to some of the clients that Lauren represented in her job as a lawyer in a small town.

The romantic sex scenes are written skillfully so they are enjoyable to read, and the potential for mawkishness in a key scene involving Lauren's father is neatly side-stepped by an author who doesn't need to resort to emotional manipulation to tell the story.

The Merry-Go-Round that provides the redemption for the main character is a clever metaphor. I could see this story translating to the big screen as it has all the ingredients for a hit movie - sexy men, clever, funny women and a main character who goes on an emotional journey and takes us with her.

5.0 out of 5 stars Summer Reading Fun, April 8, 2010
By
Old Fashioned Reader (Maryland's Eastern Shore) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Merry-Go-Round, a romantic comedy (Kindle Edition)
I loved the Merry Go Round, and I love this author. The story is romantic, old fashioned fun that goes perfectly with beaches, cotton candy, and summer vacation. This is entertainment, not literature. I enjoyed it, and as a romance reader for many years, I think other people will like it too. The negative reviews that some readers love to post seem to me to be useless and purely self-serving. Authors are not always responsible for mechanical errors and/or covers and back cover copy. I give the Merry Go Round a five star review.
This writer always gives me real characters that I can relate to, and I'm never disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars A classic, well written romantic comedy, July 5, 2011

I thoroughly enjoyed this story. It's the kind of book that you look forward to reading, all tucked into your bed. I loved the characters and the setting. The solid, accomplished writing was a pleasure. The subplot of the restauration of the old merry go round was unusual, the love story heartwarming and the suspense of 'what will happen next' made me stay up late to finish the book. I will look up this writer's other books very soon

I'm not sure what was more fun - the entire novel or the great quotes at the beginning of each chapter...well ....it was a tie!

I read it in one sitting and it was delicious! The main character, Lauren - an attorney I'd hire - and her dad, and her ex-husband, and the judge...and the...

well it is quite a Merry-Go-Round ...it left me dizzy with laughter and alive with the fun of these people...they are so real, I feel I could find them in Maryland!

Hit the download button and enjoy another great Donna Fasano book!
