1.0 out of 5 stars Not an accurate depiction of the Amish: Read Beverly Lewis instead, November 28, 2005
This review is from: A Merry Heart: Brides of Lancaster County #1 (Heartsong Presents #253) (Mass Market Paperback)
This book isn't a bad read and flows quite nicely. It would have been much better if the author had left the Amish out of it entirely....either that or done her homework. There were a few glaring discrepancies that made the book very unbelievable and the characters shallow.

1. the main character refers to her parents as mom and papa. Neither of these are the way an amish child refers to her parents. They typically are Ma and Dat

2. The main character is disrespectful to her parents and speaks to her father in a way that would never be allowed in an old order amish home

3. The main character flipantly considers renouncing her amish faith and marrying an "englischer." This is a decision that would never be considered with as little personal angst as the character showed. If she had done so she would have been shunned (a fact that is never mentioned) and would her family would have to consider her as dead.

4. The main character is searching for housing and looks at a boarding house that has running water and elcetricity. The charcter states that she thinks she could get accustomed to such amenities. Wrong again. And old order amish person is forbidden from using such things and could get shunned.

I have to say I was very disappointed in this book and as it is the first book by Brunstetter I have read, I am a little hesitant to bore myself with another of her books to see if they're all this poorly researched. If you are looking for fiction about Amish that is accurate and true to their beliefs you should read Beverly Lewis instead.
