Format: Audio CD
~ Marcus Roberts contributes two solo piano pieces: a jaunty "Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!" and an excruciatingly slow "Silent Night".
~ Roy Hargrove leads an all-star quintet through an excellent "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen".
~ "Santa Claus Is Coming to Town" and "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer " are joyful in the hands of the Hilton Ruiz piano-bass-drums trio.
~ Thelonius Monk's infrequently recorded "A Merrier Christmas" is treated with reverence by Steve Lacy (soprano sax) and Mal Waldron (piano) - although the addition of Irene Aebi's vocals for the last verse is a major letdown.
~ On the other hand, vocals by Vanessa Rubin "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" and Carmen McRae "The Christmas Song" are quite enjoyable in no small part due to excellent support musicians.
~ John Hicks and Cecil McBee team up for upbeat versions of "Jingle Blues" and "Jingle Bell Rock".
~ Antonio Hart's quartet takes a pleasant stroll through a "Winter Wonderland".
~ Less successful are Steve Coleman's "The Little Drummer Boy" and Christopher Hollyday's two contributions: a painfully slow "White Christmas" and a not-so-joyful "Joy to the World" - although Brad Mehldau does offer some nice piano work on the Hollyday recordings.
~ All in all, an uneven but nice Christmas jazz collection recorded for the Novus label in the autumn of 1990 through the summer of 1991.

This is the most amazing holiday CD. The very best of Christmas songs and jazz blended to create a spectacular sound! This is the only Christmas CD I ever play (though I own many.)

Great addition to any collection. It is one of our mainstays every Season. For the easy listening Jazz set, it may seem to get a little out there towards the end, but not too bad.

One of my all time favorite Christmas Jazz CDs, I enjoy listening to it every holiday season. All the songs have a unique jazz interpretation, and most of the songs are upbeat, but a few, such as "Silent Night" and "A Merrier Christmas" are bluesy.

Absolutely fantastic album. Lots of fun, especially for laid-back Christmas parties with hot chocolate and peppermint Schnapp's.
