5.0 out of 5 stars Warm Upbeat Christmas album
I already owned this album when it was released on another label a few years ago, but ordered this new release anyway. This is one of Lena Horne's best albums and one of the best Christmas albums out there. I'm glad it has been reissued, because years ago it was very hard to get. 1.0 out of 5 stars My copy of CD skips, may be defective...
Sadly, at the beginning of the holiday season I put this CD in and almost cried when it skipped and showed signs of a defective CD. After the holidays I will put the CD back in again after cleaning it and see if it works. If it still skips, I will return it with my receipt for a refund. What a disappointment. I was really looking forward to listening to Lena Horne...

5.0 out of 5 stars Warm Upbeat Christmas album, November 27, 2007
This review is from: Merry From Lena (Audio CD)
I already owned this album when it was released on another label a few years ago, but ordered this new release anyway. This is one of Lena Horne's best albums and one of the best Christmas albums out there. I'm glad it has been reissued, because years ago it was very hard to get. Listening to this Christmas cd, I am transported back to when life was more enjoyable in the world. It reminds me of my favorite Christmas's as a child. The sound quality is crystal clear. Although in the linear notes, I don't understand why the writer felt the need to trash Andy Williams. Not that I'm a fan, but I felf an unnecessary comment was made for a cd release. Anyway, I hope this album stays in print for years to come, this time.

I first heard this album playing in a K-Mart store over the music system doing the 60's. I thought--"a sexy Roudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer?"--and I was right. I searched for the album for many years thereafter and was not able to find it. I would catch songs from it every now and then during the xmas season on store music system but no one had the entire record. Then came Amazon.com and I found it. The best xmas album ever made--during the season I listen to it constantly.

5.0 out of 5 stars Christmas the Only Way--Lena's way!, November 18, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Merry From Lena (Audio CD)
This is a must have Christmas CD! My only dissappointment is that not all the songs listed are on my copy. But the ones that are there are superb! The first song I ever heard from Lena was Let it snow! Let it snow! Let it snow! I was probably 6 or 7 and my grandmother had an album of various artists and that cut was on there from Lena and I fell in love with a wonderfully talented artist. I've been hooked ever since. Her voice is sexy and haunting and delightful--all at the same time. IF YOU ONLY OWN ONE CHRISTMAS CD--THIS SHOULD BE IT!!!

Sly, sexy, joyous, powerful Lena Horne meets Christmas head-on in this enticing, invigorating album. Everything here is just dandy, but I particularly enjoy Lena's sense of humor on "Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer," and her recording of "Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!" is the best ever of that song. A holiday favorite in our house.

If I could only keep one Christmas album - this would be the one. So sexy you will never forget it after just listening once. A sexy Rudolph? It's here. Each and every song is fantastic. This has to be Lena at her best. Like another reviewer I didn't get all the songs listed. Mine only has eleven songs. I got this at Christmas time and two months later I am still listening to it. You'll never regret it - go for it!!!...

5.0 out of 5 stars RETRO HOT!, January 11, 2009
This review is from: Merry From Lena (Audio CD)
I love Lena Horn. I love jazzy retro Christmas albums. This one is retro without being kitsch'y. Lena's voice is so sexy and sophisticated. It made me want to drink champagne out of a coupe and put on a skinny tie. It inspired me to have a cocktail party. Why did'nt I find this one sooner.

Lena Horne has enjoyed fame and fortune; she deserves every bit of praise she ever got. Lena can sing beautifully, too; and that's readily apparent on this excellent Christmas album. The quality of the sound is excellent and the artwork is nicely done.

"Jingle All The Way" starts the album with a very creative and somewhat jazzy arrangement; Lena's excellent diction enhances her performance all the more and that strong musical arrangement complements her singing quite well. "The Christmas Song" sounds heavenly in Lena's capable hands; the percussion and the strings work wonders for this ballad as Lena sings this to perfection--and beyond! I love it. In addition, Lena does justice to the playful "Winter Wonderland;" she aces this as effortlessly as if it were mere breathing--but of course we know it really wasn't all that easy. Lena's talent always carries her through.

"White Christmas" is gorgeous when Lena Horne sings it faultlessly; this melancholy song has just a touch of optimism to it when Lena does this one up right! "Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!" has a fine arrangement and Lena delivers this like the pro she is and always will be! Listen also for the very moving song entitled "The Little Drummer Boy;" Lena really makes this a highlight of the album with her very sensitive treatment of this ballad.

"Rudolph, The Red-Nosed Reindeer" is another classic; Lena delivers this with panache and I've rarely heard a better version of this song than the way Lena does it. "What Are You Doing New Year's Eve?" is both romantic and easy on the ear; and listen for a fantastic rendition of "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas." "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" charms me with its natural beauty and Lena makes this one shine bright.

"Silent Night" gets a most sensitive interpretation by Lena who really opens up to sing this with grace and elegance; and the album ends with Lena Horne performing "Santa Claus Is Comin' to Town." What a fine ending for the album! Lena never sounded better and this upbeat tune sports an amazing musical arrangement that makes it all the better.

Lena Horne will always be a star; albums like this make me confident of that. I recommend this for her fans; and anyone who enjoys wonderful holiday music would do well to add this CD to their music collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb And Romantic Christmas Classic, May 5, 2009
By
This review is from: Merry From Lena (Audio CD)
This is a really great christmas album from LENA HORNE, one of the best in the female 'crooner' styled christmas albums ever recorded. And very romantic at that.

This album is great at any time during the christmas season, but would probably be at it's best for that evening/nightime christmas music when one just wants to settle down, perhaps with that special someone. It also makes fantastic background christmas music for company during the christmas season.

JINGLE ALL THE WAY is probably the best song on the album and it begins this whole recording off in a very deep, romantic and lounge 'styled' way. This song is really 'Jingle Bells' but not done in your typical fashion, even in it's upbeat moments as it's geared more into the romantic side of things rather a family 'fun' styled song. Even RUDOLPH THE RED-NOSED REINDEER comes across as very romantic.

Some other songs that fit this romantic, 'crooner' styled theme are WHITE CHRISTMAS and CHRISTMAS SONG.

Other great songs are LET IT SNOW! LET IT SNOW! LET IT SNOW! and a bonus song, SANTA CLAUS IS COMING TO TOWN, both which have real loud big band brassy parts in them. And every other song is great too, nothing weak anywhere.

LENA HORNE'S singing is just top-notch and as mentioned, very sexy and romantic. The orchestra is spectacular throughout providing lot's of big band brass sounds and some very lush string sounds such as violins and all done to help create that romantic 'christmas' sound. This is for sure, one of the most romantic christmas albums ever recorded.

The whole cd is flawless from start to end and if you like that romantic 'crooner' sound that FRANK SINATRA and DEAN MARTIN were famous for in their non-christmas recordings from back in the 1950's and 1960's, then this is for you, but all done with a 'christmas' flavour. Of course, very, very recommended from me!
