Frenchman GEORGES DUPLAIX was one of the key people behind the launch of the Little Golden Books in the early 1940s.

TIBOR GERGELY, who was born in Hungary and emigrated to the U.S. in 1939, was one of the most prolific of the early Little Golden Books illustrators. He brought to life some of the most classic and beloved LGB characters, including Tootle and Scuffy the Tugboat.

I got this for my children because I remembered it from my childhood. Set in NY in the 40's, a captain of a barge keeps a mostly collection of animals on the east river. One day the animals take the boat out alone, get shipwrecked rescued and celebration ensues. Charming rendering of NY City in the 1940's. Interesting historical references / backdrop. Mild ethnic stereotypes (Italian grocer, etc)

This is an old-fashioned little book that still inspires plenty of giggles. I did have to explain some of the illustrations (like the Good Humor Man) to the resident almost six-year-old, but the simple, funny story was a hit.

The illustrations are colorful and extremely detailed. My daughter had so much fun picking out what the various animals were doing! The text is simple, but engaging, making this a very nice bedtime story.

It has a place of honor on the book shelf and has already gone through many readings in the short time we've owned it!

My kids grew up with a big version of this book and always loved it. The illustrations are great - lots to talk about with a young child. The text is engaging, not too wordy, and tells a good story. I was so happy to see it in print again!
