First the good... Great premise! Kudos to Ami Blackwelder for the idea. This is a dystopian future that I've never thought of, much less read about. I thought the author did a great job thinking this world up along with the strife and tension between the "races" in the different areas of it. The "Aristos", the "Mers", the "Commoners", the "Magi"s" and all the rest were very well imagined. And the horror of the callous treatment of the Mers was so well done in it's offhand "this is just the way it is" manner that it really made my spine tingle! This book was a great start at fleshing out this future world.
Now the bad. I had a terrible time with the characters. They just never made me care about them because they just seemed so shallow and two dimensional. I got really tired of Mira "smirking" at people for one thing. I also don't think it's necessary to spell out everything the characters are thinking and feeling. Leave some of it unsaid, so the reader can use their imagination.
I understand that publishing to an e-reader is different and maybe more complicated than regular publishing (?), but I really think it's important to make sure you are using words correctly in your work. If one of your characters is "peeking" at something don't spell it "peaking". "Revealing" shouldn't be spelled "reveling". Maybe just spellcheck errors? I don't know but they were little things that distracted me from the storyline and decreased my enjoyment of it.
All in all, I loved the story premise and plot and the possibilities they contained, but I was disappointed in the finished product.

I received a free copy of The Mers to review.

The Mers was an interesting take on a story about mers and humans, set in the future after global warming has caused the Earth to become a "waterworld" with very little land. Mers are isolated in their own section of the scarce, dry land, and the humans are in another area. Under rules of their agreement after the war, neither group is to cross the borders.

Mira, the main character, is curious about her past - she is not like the other Mer folk. She plans a journey to cross the border into human territory to find out about her true family. This story tells about her life in the Mer village as well as her journey of enlightenment.

I enjoyed reading the story and found it quite inventive. My copy had a few errors, but I had no trouble following the story. I think this might be a problem with a lot of Kindle books.

I look forward to reading the next installments in this trilogy.

I received Mers from the author Ami Blackwelder in return for a honest review from a giveaway on Librarything. The book is set 100 years in the future,over that time the earth has changed dramatically, causing humans to adapt to survive. Humans took to the water growing webbed feet and hands, gaining the ability to breath and swim under the water, these people are now called Mer. Mira isn't a mer, but she grew up among the mers even raised by mer parents. However Mira has always wondered who where she comes from because she's the only one of her kind living on Liberty Island.

Mira decides to set out for the human colony even though they are forbidden to venture there she still has to know even if it means leaving the mer she loves. Nerin knows Mira maybe better then herself and he knows she's up to something but he's not going to let her go alone, so he goes with her, his little sister tags along with them. The trio journey to Jersey to find out who Mira really is. Since Nerin and Nerissa both have webbed feet and don't look like humans because they have adapted to the water it's up to Mira to explore the colony.

While exploring the city Mira learns that Mers are treated like more like slaves while the royals rule the city. She meets Ethan the son of the king and instantly form a connection with him, wanting to learn more about the humans. However the more she learns the less and less she likes about the royals, they see the mers as nothing more then a product that they can use like wigs, skin cream, and they are hunted by pirates.

I was super excited to win Mers because I've recently gotten hooked on mermaid books. I found the concept unique and fascinating, I had a hard time putting it down to do real life stuff. I really found Mira easy to connect with, she's likable with a good heart which is something I love in a character plus she's also a little kick-ass. I found the story well written, it flows smoothly, and the characters are well developed. I like the idea of the Mers I can see it happening if things were to change which brings on the question maybe we do have mermaids in the water. Mer's really played to my imagination and I loved that so much. I loved it and can't wait for the next one.
