4.0 out of 5 stars Touched by an Angel, October 24, 2005

This review is from: La Merveilleuse Visite [VHS] (VHS Tape)
The angels of the Old Testament are not winged nymphs full of love for the weak and needy. They are the messengers of God; some can destroy a city. Others can announce a special birth; still others warn of imminent danger. This movie is a charming film, a simple story of H.G. Wells, about an angel without wings who falls to earth and lands in a small French village. The whole "earth" experience is new to him and he is very naive in understanding how societies function. (For example, he "liberates" all the animals in the village, totally unaware that the people need these animals for their livelihood.) How the peasants, priests, and shopkeepers react to the angel is the focus of the movie. Eventually, the angel is misunderstood and driven out. Allegorically, this is what happens when people attach religious values to the Bible that simply are not there, or approach the world without any sense of the sacred. This movie dares to explore a very interesting problem in an intelligent manner. For those interested in God issues without being forced to watch meaningless Hollywood depictions of angels, this is the film for you.
