5.0 out of 5 stars Is this enough of a hook for you?
This is a great CD. The ernies are virtually unknown and I don't know why. Their music is sort of a hybrid of styles that are akin to Less than Jake, Rancid, Primus, and the Beastie Boys. The lyrics are all related to natural science in one way or another and you can tell that these boys are educated, but these songs rock! Don't hesitate picking up this CD, just...

I have always liked the Ernies for their uniqueness, but for some reason, I got tired of listening to it. Its all cool, and has funny lyrics, awesome chorus, and great saxophone solos, but still, it IS all the same as another reviewer mentioned. Still, you should try it out if you are into Ska, Punk, Rock, or whatever. (For a quick laugh and a very temporary favorite...

The lyrics are all related to natural science in one way or another and you can tell that these boys are educated, but these songs rock! Don't hesitate picking up this CD, just like the Game says "It's that damn good!" Best tracks are Here and Now, You are Everywhere, It's Digestible, and Polarized.

4.0 out of 5 stars I miss Stefan .., May 8, 1999

Although the music itself seems a bit "radioish". The lyrics still drop science, plus Hayes (sax) kicks some major rear. I don't even like Dj music, but Chris Bondi does some stuff that even I get into and dance to. Although I loved The Ernies' self title album, & Dropping Science much better.. the new album, Meson Ray, is still pretty fun. Even if you don't particularly like the album, they've been doing shows like crazy and each show is amazing.. not scripted either!

5.0 out of 5 stars Heh heh, December 27, 2001
This review is from: Meson Ray (Audio CD)
This is real good stuff. Ska isn't my favorite genre, but The Ernies make it seem that way while listening to them. "Fire" and "Here and Now" are extremely awesome. These guys also have a sense of humor. Their choice of words are very intelligent, but they do it in such a funny way. Check it out if you aren't one of those blockheads that think music has to be serious.

Still, you should try it out if you are into Ska, Punk, Rock, or whatever. (For a quick laugh and a very temporary favorite band.) It is a very cool, and funny album, but it gets old really quick, and the lead might drive you up the wall with his... unique singing talet... but it REALLY gets old. Ocassionlly I still listen to it, but it doesn't have as much of a charm as before.

the cd isn't officialy released yet, but I am well connected with the ernies and i have it already. HA HA!!! it's their best cd by far. This one sounds so different then the other 2. It's like with every album their style changes, but in a good way!! I recomend everyone buy it!!! These guys are extreamly gifted (not to mention really cute), and you should at least once make it out to a show. It's like nothing you've ever heard before. The ernies are destined to become the next big thing in music.

Well, for those among the public that have not heard of the Ernies, I feel very sorry for you! MOJO Records got the best new band in America when they signed the Ernies! Meson Ray proves again that they can do any kind of music and make it sound better than anyone else! For those who try to label the band, a good label would come in the song it's digestable. A little bit of everything. It's great to see another album out, they have taken the best of rock, ska, rap, jazz, and reggee combined it with some great lyrics and have put out the best album of the year. Do yourselves a favor and buy this album, many times!

5.0 out of 5 stars I Want Something Real, April 8, 2005

It's Digestible! The Ernies rock, and they rock hard. Their first album was pure old school ska, but by Meson Ray they have toned up into more of a 3rd wave, 311-esque rock. The lyrics are amazing, absolutely stunning dropping science. A clip from "It's Digestible":

"Q-tip's pop says that hip-hop reminded him of be-bop and now there's something called trip-hop so like Thucydides, let's check the histories in the hopes of clearin' up any mysteries: hip-hop, be-bop, ragtime to jazz, takin' it to that afro-cuban pizzazz, r&b, gospel and blues, how could you lose the connection to rock but hip-hop and rock are only two-thirds of the tryptic the other panel, it's a little more eclectic like ska, in the first wave, to 2tone, to third wave, to reggae, to dub, to trip-hop to techno, to disco, it all comes down to afro-caribbean rhythms and something more incredible, the universe entertaining itself in a way that's digestible..."

Sweet down home rude boys. Richmond couldn't be prouder and we are waiting for the reunion tour.

4.0 out of 5 stars Cool, unique album, but it's all the same, November 28, 2000
This review is from: Meson Ray (Audio CD)
Meson Ray shows how unique this band is. It is undoubtedly the nerdiest rock/rap album ever created, but that's what makes it good. The great sax, weird lyrics, and overall great sound makes The Ernies one-of-a-kind. Track 2 was even on the soundtrack to Tony Hawk's Pro Skater, and it's an awesome song. One of my favorites. However, once you've heard on song, you've heard them all. The singer's voice gets a tad annoying, and some songs flat out aren't any good. Still, this is a great listen for those who are willing to try something new.

2.0 out of 5 stars ITS REDUNDANT, April 23, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Meson Ray (Audio CD)
Well at first I was really excited about the new CD...but then I heard the demo. The ernies sound changed from original ska influenced music to a very Jimmy's Chicken Shack sounding power chord rock. There are three good songs on this album: Here and Now (the not very ernies sounding single), Mr. Benson and the Meson Ray (a pretty good ska jam that they played at a lot of their shows), and Its Digestible (an incredible song which proves that the ernies could have put out a stronger major label debut, and also sounds incredible live). The ernies dont like to be labeled or catagorized and contained, but they have done just this, with a record that sounds like a mix between Rage, Jimmys Chicken Shack, and 311. If you are an ernies fan, I dont reccomend this to you, but if you like the aforementioned groups--knock yourself out. I am just glad I went to the Bouncing souls show instead of their record release show.
