MESS album trailer

Biography

It’s almost ten years since they first started making music together, but at the start of a new decade Liars find themselves in the unlikely position of being art-rock elder statesmen.

This is unlikely because, while some of the other bands lumped into the Brooklyn post-punk revival scene that first brought Liars to prominence have floundered, this is a group that have constantly ... Read more in Amazon's Liars Store

Editorial Reviews

Mess is Liars SEVENTH album. This follow up to 2012's WIXIW is an angry, ecstatic, primal burst of ritualistic synth-rock that sacrifices self persecution for potent, purposeful abandon.Liars' career has seen the band rattle through pigeonholes in an attempt to avoid them all together: brittle yet taught punk funk; liminal no-wave; ecstatic noise-pop; 21st-century garage rock; post-millennial post-rock; delicate electronics; reaching here, where Angus Andrew, Aaron Hemphill and Julian Gross now find themselves.

5.0 out of 5 stars another successful reinvention... March 25, 2014
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
It's amazing how many albums Liars put out...In my opinion there was almost a lull, between the s/t and Sisterworld. Not really a lull, but a hum. Then WIXIW made me love them again. This continues my love affair with the band that started off with their dancey punky "they threw us in a trench..." and, from that point, reinvented themselves with every album they created. This...is Liars. it's fun, creepy, lovely, decadent, drippy and euphoric. That seems to be their signature sound. But this album is colder, more electronic..like passing out in the stall of an 80's club, rhythmically nodding out while being occasionally woken by the thump of a fist knocking on the door, and the distant sound of dudes talking man talk where only a few words are acknowledged...and barely make sense when staring into the void of the Porcelain God.

4.0 out of 5 stars aggressive electronic beat music April 11, 2014
Format:Audio CD
7th release from this Los Angeles band—“Mess” marks a return to the oversized distortion and
aggressive confrontation of their earlier work. This is electronic beat music that’s up-front and
in-your-face, demented & demanding dance-floor spazz grooves. Although the songs have a
challenging attitude of experimentation, the adept combination of cohesion and chaos, mixed
with dark tribal elements and a fun/creative flow—plus an increased awareness of core melody
lines—gives this “Mess” a new range of accessibility and power. Reminiscent of bands like
F--- Buttons, Lust For Youth, Aphex Twin, Plastikman, Cabaret Voltaire, Boards Of Canada, Autechre.
Yet another surprising cool chapter in the book of Liars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect Chaos April 13, 2014
By N Tower
Format:Audio CD
Liars is one of those rare bands that constantly reinvents themselves. Rather than throwing out the same album over and over, they always surprise us with something innovative. While occasionally this results in them producing something that sounds more like "tinkering with art" rather than actual music, that is certainly not the case with Mess. This is a powerful and driven album with striking beats and ear-grabbing sounds. The album is rich, colorful, and diverse, and the bands never misses a step during the whole ride. For the patient fan, this "mess" of an album comes together in perfect chaos.

On a side note, I purchased the limited edition vinyl from the band's presale. I have yet to open the thing because I'm not sure how to do it without destroying the integrity of the art. It's a beautiful package, but it isn't very functional for anyone interested in "using" it.
