Up-and-Coming Folk-Rock Superstar!,

This review is from: Mess You Up (Audio CD)
I'm writing this review three days after this CD was released. I first heard Beth Boucher (say "boo-shay") last Fall at the House of Blues in Cambridge, Massachusetts. I was just amazed at her ability to blend great rockin' music with briliant lyrics. I could not believe she did not have a CD for sale, but was pleased to learn that one was on the way in January. Now that I've got it, I am not disappointed.Songs about relationships are a perennial favorite of mine, and Beth manages to convey both the comedy and the angst while keeping True Love clearly in sight. Interestingly, she often hits the mark by beating around the bush, creating an aura of loss or longing with a brief description of a moment or of a few fleeting thoughts. Musically, the songs run the gamut from bouncy rockers to smooth ballads, in the best female folk-rock tradition. Beth's voice is great, reminiscent (to me at least) of Susanna Hoffs of the Bangles, but with a more smokey flavor (that is, smoother, not like she's a heavy smoker!). So, if you're in the Boston (or NY) area, seek Beth out and see her while she's still playing the local clubs. And definitely buy this great debut CD wherever you happen to be!

I bought this cd about a year and a half ago from cd baby and have been playing it ever since. I have given it as a gift six or seven times and EVERYBODY loves Beth. Her lyrics are witty and catchy and fun to sing along with. All of us want more music from Beth Boucher!

I really like the variety of styles on this CD. Beth would be hard to categorize at this point. She has a great voice but more than that, her writing is very sharp and witty but not really forced or pretentious. one thing that the songs have in common is that they are very catchy. I listened to the cd all the way through and I think I liked "gimme some time" the best at first.I didn't realize that two days later I would be revisited by lyrics from all the other songs playing over and over in my head...ahhhhhh! No, that's actually a good thing. Okay, now the short review for Beth Boucher's "mess you up" . I loved it and I look forward to her next CD.

Beth Boucher's debut is a very strong one. This is a very catchy and instantly likeable recording. The songs are radio friendly without being boring, they have interesting melodies and rhythms and Beth's voice is very nice. She knows how to write a good solid pop song.(read full review at collectedsounds.com)

I totally agree with Dagolden's review. This is an album of varied sounds and textures. It's smart. Lively. Catchy. And solid. You will be singing these songs over and over in your head.I've actually had the good fortune of being able to see Beth with her ridiculously good looking band several times and they totally rock. This is a great CD. Oh yeah, I can't forget to mention that the production on "Mess You Up" is awesome too!!

This cd gets off to a great start, and just gets better. It's rare to find a cd that you can listen to from start to finish, so many cd's are filled with one hit wonders. Beth takes the listener on a journey through many different experiences - there's something on this cd for everyone.

This album is a keeper, every song is worth listening to and none beg to be skipped. Each song has it's own style and keeps you listening, many of the songs are also great for singing along to, especially "mess you up" when your driving in boston traffic :-) I've had it on heavy rotation in my car stereo and every passenger so far has been very complementary.Beth touches us and makes us smile with her poignient lyrics and rye humor. Beth is comparable to other great female singer/songwriters (Suzan Vega, Sarah McLachlan), although beth's range and personality makes any single influence impossible to identify. The humor and diversity that Beth exhibits on her album also remind me of is the Beck and the Dixie Chicks. If your in the boston area you should surely try and see her play live.

A friend passed me a demo album for Beth Boucher that she picked up at a concert and it's pretty good early work. Though I'm not someone who argues with friends over genre titles, I'd say this clearly falls into the "indie" category emphasizing unrefined vocals and heavy acoustic guitar, but with some rather pleasant pop overtones of hook-y melodies and smart lyrics. Beth's style is reminiscent of several other female singer/songwriters (Fiona Apple, Sheryl Crow, Sarah McLachlan) but never to the point of outright imitation -- and she experiments with a rather impressive range of styles on the album, as if she's still looking for what fits her own lovely voice best. Good new music is terrribly hard to find these days, and this is definitely worth a listen.

i bought this cd because it came recommended so many times here on cd now. honestly i didnt know what to expect from. but now it is by far one of my favorite cds. i have not stopped listening to it. her songs are smart, fun, and meaningful. all the songs on this cd are my favorite but the one i listen to first everytime is "mess you up". it is just such a sweet song. it is just so refreshing to hear some good music come out in a time when the music industry is run by the same repeated crap that bands simply steal from each other. if you are looking for a great cd this is it. beth boucher is the savior of todays music.

When I listen to this cd, I feel all happy and hummy inside. These tunes keep weaving in and out of my thoughts and some lucky mornings I wake up with one wafting through my sleepy dream head. If you get a chance to see her in concert, go. Her funny, lyrical, quirky self shines through her head bopping, toe tapping tunes.
