4.0 out of 5 stars Great music, almost great packaging January 25, 2010
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Anyone reading this will want to know if it's worth upgrading their existing Police box from the original narrow (24x12cm) book edition to this coffee table edition. Answer: probably not. I bought it because I had all the original albums in analog form and wanted everything in one package. In my case, yes this was a deal. However, I have a caveat to offer: the book could have been produced better.

Sure, it's sturdy and a pleasure to flip through, but the weakness are the photos. Some are blown up from the smaller box set and look dull and blurry. That detracts from the rest of the packaging which is handsome. If Earbook is demanding you shell out substantial more this edition then they should've got everything right, not almost everything.

Upshot: great music, good idea, but so-so photos amounts to 4/5 stars and not a perfect 5/5.

2.0 out of 5 stars **** The Police! November 4, 2011
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
First, let me get this out of the way: The Police were one of the best bands in history. Not because they were successful, but because almost everything they done was a masterpiece. Gordon Sumner (Sting), Andy Summers and Stewart Copeland were all equally talented musicians and composers, and together they had a unique sound that no one could duplicate (at least not completely). They recorded 5 amazing albums and all their B-sides could easily make-up a 6th one. Even their 1986 version of "Don't Stand So Close to Me", while flawed, is a good song.

So, if they were that good, why 2 stars?

Because this collection sucks. And let me tell you why.

First of all, it was re-mastered only once, in 1993. This 2006 re-issue was just copied from the original release. You might not know this, but, aside from the Rumble Fish soundtrack, everything released by A&M on CD in the early 90's sounds poor, and Message in a Box is no exception. Re-mastering is the process of using the original master tapes to re-create the album from scratch before re-releasing it. This process can go wrong if the people responsible do not know what they're doing. If you want proof that the sound is poor, compare any album track on this collection to the same track on one of the 2003 re-issues (sold in digipaks, you can't miss them).

Second, and this is the biggest offender, the collection is NOT complete. These are NOT the "complete" recordings. What is missing, you might ask?

1) The US version has the original 1986 version of "Don't Stand So Close to Me", while the European one has the dance remix (b-side of the original single). Whichever version you get, you WILL be missing one track. Unless you buy both.
