5.0 out of 5 stars They Don't Make 'em Like This Anymore
Socially conscious, historically in-tuned, and, (ahem) REAL INSTRUMENTS AND HARMONIC VOCALS! Nobody--and I mean NOBODY--did it better than the O'Jays. The album title and cover lets everyone know what music meant to the inner city people of the 70s and where exactly we got our intense love of music. Where did the 70s go? WHY did the 70s go? What happened to my Schwinn...

3.0 out of 5 stars A Step Down
This album was the first of lackluster albums by the O'Jays. This one was a little understandable because of member William Powell becoming sick and later dying in 1977. So sad! From this point on the group would never be the same, even though they were able to last. This record did have 2 powerful songs("Message In Our Music" and "Darlin' Darlin' Baby (Sweet, Tender,...

5.0 out of 5 stars One who loves good soul music, August 11, 2000

This CD compilation is a rarity. It has Messsages that are positive and it is good music. My favorite track is "I want you here with me" This song and others are one of the reasons why I bought it.Second of all it is classic and timeless soul music that can hold it's own aginst any R&B song of today. Not even Boys2Men can make people get up and dance like the O'Jays music still does.By the way my age is 29. And i prefer Classic R&B over what is out now.

This album was the first of lackluster albums by the O'Jays. This one was a little understandable because of member William Powell becoming sick and later dying in 1977. So sad! From this point on the group would never be the same, even though they were able to last. This record did have 2 powerful songs("Message In Our Music" and "Darlin' Darlin' Baby (Sweet, Tender, Love)"). I love the latter, it was the first 45 record I ever owned, but the rest of the album seemed to lose the direction that the last 4 albums had. Maybe it was because music was pushing more disco than ever before, who knows, but this was definitely a step down for the group.

5.0 out of 5 stars How to make an epic soul album, May 20, 2009

Take three fabulous singers -- two of the best lead singers in the history of music in Eddie Levert and Walter Williams -- add legendary song writers and producers Gamble & Huff, and don't forget the magnificant backing band of MFSB and you have yet another tremendous album by The O'Jays.

If you're wondering if it gets better than "Message in the Music", well, probably not unless you search for another O'Jays album, "Backstabbers", which is arguably the greatest soul album of all time.

But don't miss "Message in the Music."

The excellent title track kicks things into gear, followed by the slow spiritual "A Prayer."

Things really get moving with "Paradise" and then the most underrated song on the album and one of the group's most underrated ever, "Make a Joyful Noise." This album has a lot of joyful noise on it.

A fantastic love ballad, "Desire Me" -- yet another underrated O'Jays tune -- follows. Then the group's hit and concert favorite, "Darlin' Darlin' Baby" follows, with the wonderful trademark 1-2 shared lead approach by Williams and Levert.

Closing it out are excellent album tracks, "I Swear, I Love No One But You" and "Let Life Flow." Not a bad track on the album, they're all excellent. A true gem of an album, and in today's world, a hidden gem of an album.

It's also a don't-miss album.

The O'Jays do it again!

The three LPs reissued on this CD were all million-sellers and remain among The O'Jays' most pivotal releases. All three albums contain soulful ballads and uptempo Disco tracks as performed by one of R&B's greatest groups. All-time classics like "Message In Our Music"{, "Darlin' Darlin' Baby", "Forever Mine", "We're All In This Thing Together" and "Work On Me" are supreme examples of how great the musical marriage of The O'Jays and Kenneth Gamble and Leon Huff's Philadelphia International label was.
