Book Description

June 1993
Written in the rhythms and idiom of contemporary language--the way you'd talk with friends, write a letter, or discuss politics at the office--The Message brings with it the flavor of the original Greek, which is surprisingly informal. Peterson--a prolific poet, author, and pastor--provides in this unique translation a fresh, contemporary look at an all-time bestseller.

From the Back Cover

THE NEW TESTAMENT LIKE YOU’VE NEVER READ IT BEFORE. It is commonly assumed that a book dealing with a holy God should sound elevated, stately, and ceremonial. If this is how you’ve always viewed the New Testament, you’re about to make a surprising discovery. One of the most striking features of the New Testament is that it was written in the street language of the day––the idiom of the playground and marketplace, not the formal, lofty language of government decrees and historical documents. Written in the rhythms and idiom of contemporary language––the way you’d talk with friends, write a letter, or discuss politics––The Message brings out the expressive, earthy flavor of the New Testament. Which means that, whether you’ve been reading the Bible for years or are exploring it for the first time, The Message will startle and surprise you. And it will allow you to experience firsthand the same power and directness that motivated its original readers to change the course of history many centuries ago.

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally I can read God's word & know what He wants from me., June 3, 1998
This review is from: The Message: The New Testament in Contemporary English (Hardcover)
The Message is a good read. Easy to read chapter after chapter because the language relates to where I am in todays world. After 30plus years of study I finally get it. Thanks to Peterson for allowing God to use him to get through to me.

This is an enjoyable new read of the N.T. The young people in my congregation began calling it the "Yo-Dude" version of the Bible. Most importantly, they READ it, and enjoy it. Thank you, Eugene Petersen

This review is from: The Message: The New Testament in Contemporary English (Hardcover)
What a fresh, alive, delightful paraphrase of the New Testament! Wakes up some passages that might feel tired to those who have studied the Bible for many years. The perfect choice to introduce a young person to the Bible, or to add to a Bible reader's personal library. Author Eugene Peterson's phrasing and word choices are so fresh, so full of life and energy and love, that you'll find yourself smiling as you read it! Reviews have compared him to North America's answer to J.B. Phillips. I have purchased many copies for friends and even for my Pastor, as gifts.
