Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

In Mrs. Gator's classroom, the lesson for the day is letter writing, and her students (who include animals as well as kids) pick up lots of useful pointers. The amiable alligator first explains the basic components of a letter, from the heading down to the signature or postscript. Tips for "creative letters" are included, among them epistles written on paper cut into various shapes or penned in invisible ink (lemon juice, that shows up when it is ironed "with adult permission"). Leedy's cheerful pictures and sprightly writing samples done in childlike lettering illustrate her succinct guidelines for composing invitations, thank-you notes, get-well letters, tidings of felicitation ("Congratulations on your new baby. I'm sure he will grow into his ears."), fan letters and business correspondence. A lighthearted yet informative how-to by the author of The Dragon ABC Hunt and The Furry News . Ages 4-8.

From School Library Journal

Grade 1-4-- This book beats any textbook chapter on how to write letters. Friendly letters, business letters, letters of congratulations, and those of complaint are all explained, along with many other types of correspondence and bits and facts, such as the minimum envelope size accepted by the post office; stamps; and how mail travels. And young readers will certainly be interested in the section on writing secret messages. Leedy's softly colored realistic illustrations feature both animal characters and people from a variety of cultures. The partnership of text and illustration gives a lively and interesting perspective to a otherwise dull topic. Classroom writing centers should make this title available, and school and public libraries will want circulating copies. A superb book that shouldn't be missed. --Sharron McElmeel, Cedar Rapids Community Schools, IA

More About the Author

I've been writing and illustrating picture books for children for over twenty-five years. Though I majored in art in college, at the time I wasn't sure what kind of artist to be. Fortunately, it turned out that combining words and art to create picture books was a perfect career for me. Most of my books center around a particular topic such as fractions, the solar system, writing, and so on. The characters and story lines help put the subject matter into a meaningful context for young readers.

After growing up mostly in Delaware, I moved to central Florida a couple of decades ago, and currently live with my husband Andy on a three acre property with hawks, herons, and horses (the horses live next door.) We love the rustle of the pines in the breeze, the screeching of sandhill cranes flying overhead, and the chattering of many small birds that come and go as they please.

5.0 out of 5 stars cute and full of great info, June 26, 2002
This review is from: Messages in the Mailbox: How to Write a Letter (Paperback)
This book is great for teaching kids about letter writing. It's written in a comicbook type style and really keeps the childrens attention.

It covers all the parts of a letter and also what happened to your letter after it leaves your home.

My son is 7 and he really learned alot and enjoyed this book.

I love this book for teaching the letter format to my students and have no complaint except the illustration on the very first page that shows an INCORRECT method of holding a writing utensil! With the advent of digital technology, handwriting has been grossly neglected, please teach your children the correct methods for holding pens and pencils and proper Spencerian handwriting.
