This review is from: Messerschmitt MeP1099B Two-Seater All-Weather Fighter 1-72 Revell Germany (Toy)
I've not been a fan of 1/72 scale because of its size and what I feel lack of detail (out of the box), especially for small parts. I think the last thing I built in the scale was a B-24 Liberator from Academy, many years ago and I remember the gun barrels were simply thin plastic rods.
This kit however changed my mind, the surface detail is very nice, especially for Revell (a company I've always viewed as second rate). There is nicely scribed panel detail, not the raised panels I'm used to from Revell, and most importantly the small parts are as nicely made as quality 1/48 parts, I was especially impressed by the seats which had raised harnesses molded in, a detail often left out even on 1/48 Revell kits. The fit was another highlight, everything went together tight and snug, no filler was needed for the body. In fact the fit was so good I was able to leave the wing, engine and tail off the body for painting with no fear of having to repaint because of gaps. I built my plane wheels up, an option included in the instructions,(always appreciated)so I cannot comment on the fit and sturdiness of the landing gear assembly. I only have two complaints, first one is partially my fault. In the instructions you are told to remove some molding from around the cockpit, not flash but actually thick plastic. I did this blindly not checking the hit of the canopy before removing the plastic to the depth in the instructions. CHECK THE FIT before doing this, I don't think it's necessary as doing it to the level in the instructions left a gaping seam on one or both sides of the canopy to body. This required me to glue down the canopy and use filler before painting the main body, making painting the canopy frame much more difficult. Second issue was the decals. Though nicely printed and easily applied, several of the decals kept coming up after drying no matter how much decal softener I reapplied. The crosses were especially bad, in the end I had to use a bit of glue to secure some of the edges. Not really sure what that was about, considering the kit is a pretty new release. If you are a fan of Luft46 kits or just unique aircraft I would recommend buying this kit, it is a great value for it's price, especially for the genre.
