4.0 out of 5 stars A great inside look at one of hockey's superstars
Rick Carpineollo does a fine job in giving us a personal glimpse of Ranger great Mark Messier. He deftly describes the determination, competitive spirit and innate talent of Messier...and along the way reveals the player's generous, caring, "genuine good guy" traits. Lots of on-the-ice action and amusing anecdotes make this book an enjoyable, easy read.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not any new info here
If you have ever watched any of the NHL videos with Messier clips, a lot of this information will look or sound familiar because it relies heavily on well-publicized newspaper stories. Some stuff was new to me regarding the Messier/Neilsen incident, but don't buy it based on that, not enough to justify it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Refreshing!, August 16, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Messier: Hockey's Dragon Slayer (Paperback)
Well written! Keeps you interested and waiting to find out what happens next. Mr. Carpiniello has given the reader a lovely glimpse into the career of a wonderful athlete. As a hockey mom whose son greatly admires this superstar, I am grateful for a biography that celebrates the leader, the nice guy. In answer to "Horrible", who cares whom the athletes go out with and who doesn't assume that they do? Fill in the blanks or read Jackie Collins. On target to what the sport is about. The hard work, the dedication and the will to win! Well done!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must Read, January 4, 2000
This review is from: Messier: Hockey's Dragon Slayer (Paperback)
This is a must read for Messier fans and Ranger fans alike. It follows Messier's career and provides some insight on the trade that sent Mess to Vancouver. The foreward by Brian Leetch was very interesting.

4.0 out of 5 stars Enigma Revealed, December 22, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Messier: Hockey's Dragon Slayer (Paperback)
Messier is the true hockey enigma, and this book reveals as much about him as we'll ever probably know. Filled with interesting anecdotes, I totally enjoyed it. The foreword by Brian Leetch is also a great read.

4.0 out of 5 stars A NICE BOOK, May 28, 2007

THIS IS ABOUT MARK MESSIER FORMER NHL GREAT. THE BOOK COVERS THE CAREER OF MESSIER AND A BIT OF HIS PRIVATE LIFE. MOST OF THE BOOK IS ABOUT HIS CAREER WITH THE NEW YORK RANGERS AND HIS LEADERSHIP THAT HELP THEM FINALLY WIN A STANLEY CUP. THE BOOK IS NOT WRITTEN GREAT DETAIL BUT STILL IS INTERESTING AND MOVES ALONG. I FOUND SOME OF HIGHLIGHTS WERE HIS RELATIONSHIP WITH GRETZKY, HIS BURNING DESIRE TO WIN AND THE BIG EGO AND THE HIGH MAINTENANCE HE REQUIRES TO KEEP HIM HAPPY AND TO PLAY HARD. IT IS A NICE EASY READ AND IS ENTERTAINING. RECOMMENDED.

Pretty revealing book. I wish there could be a sequel that would discuss Messier years after he came back from Vancouver.

1.0 out of 5 stars Generic Fluff, October 12, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Messier: Hockey's Dragon Slayer (Paperback)
Mark Messier is and always will be my favorite hockey player but this book provides no original insight into his character whatsoever. The book offers the same repetitve praise over and over about what great leader he is without ever touching upon the other sides of his personality, particularly the darker and more personal aspects that we don't get to read about in the paper. This book could have been written in a week.
