Unique and Lovely,
By

I purchased this CD a few years ago, and found it was one of those that had to grow on me. Once it did, I listened to it at least once a day. Now I'm down to once a week or so, with a couple of the tracks on my Favorites playlist on my iPod. The music and the vocals are different from your typical bland terrestrial radio fare, and the band incorporates interesting organic sounds to compliment the instruments. "Ripen" comes to mind immediately as an example of this, and is one of my favorite tracks on the CD. Exceptional stand-out tracks include "Ripen," "I Gotta Sing," "Want to Write You," "UK Theater," and "Apart From This."

Immaculate,

This short album is amazing. It bridges such a wide span of genres that it has something for everyone and can't be rightly described with labels like "electronica" or "alternative". This is definitely an acquired taste - I developed buyer's remorse after my first listen through, but after a few days I love this thing. Try to find some samples before buying.

Mutant Offspring of SFA and The Flaming Lips,
By DW (chicago, IL) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Messy Century (Audio CD)
The Mountaineers' Messy Century sounds like a mutant offspring of Super Furry Animals and The Flaming Lips but with better melodies. The use of weird noises and innovative sound treatments make this a refreshing listen every time.
Fans of Gomez, SFA, Flaming Lips, Elbow and other interesting groups will enjoy this CD. This stuff is way ahead of it's time. [DW]

Fantastic, upbeat, incredible music,

The Mountaineers are a great up and coming band from Mute Records. Theyre music is slightly Flaming Lips influenced without the silliness. Imagine the Beatles fused together with the Lips and you get the Mountaineers. They are a couple of humble geezers. Good guys. Pick this record up...you wont regret it.

one of the better albums of 2003,

i found out about the mountaineers from a BBC review for messy century, which rated this album a 10/10. i checked out some of the songs on the bands official web site, and was instantly blown away by the song "all my life." one of the most catchy and upbeat songs of the year. the mountaineers remind me of a mixture of the pop sensibility of the flaming lips w/ electronic touches similar to notwist. out of the 13 tracks i'd say 9 are dead on. plus check out the video for the opening track "ripen" on their web page, it has some of the coolest animation in a video i've seen, simply sick. i can't wait until the mountaineers tour the states, i know i'll be there!
