Book Description

8 and up
"The stories are well-paced for suspenseful telling . . . and transitional readers will be drawn in by the promise of scary fare spiked with pen-and-ink drawings."--Bulletin for the Center for Children's Books.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 3-5-- A collection of five scary and gross stories that feature young boys with typical childhood fears. Gorog has taken daily events, actions, and situations; given them an unusual twist or turn; and created an absurdly wonderful collection. Bruno lives in a salvage yard where the treasures talk. He has no problem until "The Angel" is delivered. Zack dislikes big, fat kissing lips in "Wet Kisses." Louis, a worrywart, has much to fear from an ordinary trip in "Oh, Louis!!!" Any child with an untidy room will identify with Sam in "In a Messy, Messy Room." And, Toad wins the "Smelly Sneakers" contest and loses his feet in the process. Written with third graders in mind, Gorog's style and subject matter are right on target. The book's appeal will not be limited to one age group, however. These stories can be read by families, in a classroom setting, or at a slumber party. Storytellers can surely add them to their repertoire. Add this one to Alvin Schwartz' In a Dark, Dark Room and Other Scary Stories (Harper, 1984) and Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark (Lippincott, 1984) to make an enticing display. Full of zany fun, weird and wacky characters and situations, this easily read collection will surely be popular. --Molly Kinney, North Dade Regional Lib . , Miami, FL
