A look at musical analysis from the viewpoint of gestalt psychology. When many theories are tied to an aesthetic or limited to particular styles of music, the brilliance of Tenney's thesis is that we can discuss music in more universal terms of perception, a viewpoint that is unbound to stylistic bias. Tenney's writing contributed to the basis of Hierarchical Music Specification Language (HMSL), a computer music language developed at Mills College Center for Contemporary Music, and later Java Music Specification Language (JMSL, see [...]).
