From the Manufacturer

Metabo 600292420 WE14-125 VS Electronic Variable Speed 4.5-Inch/5-Inch Angle Grinder. Metabo is well known for its top-class angle grinders. Excellent quality, high performance and user-friendly ergonomics are characteristics which are also distinctly evident in our new generation of small angle grinders. We do Medium grinding on metal shafts using 4 1/2 inch flap disc about 1-2 hours a day 3-4 days a week. We were using dewalt brand that was almost half the price of the Metabo and the Dewalt outlasted the Metabo. The Metabo only lasted us 3 months were the Dewalt was lasting typically about 6-8 months.
We are sending the grinder in on warranty, but we'll see if they honor it.

UPDATE 6/18/13: WARRANTY DENIED BY METABO. Contacted Metabo they told me to send the grinder to their warranty department, which I did. About a week later I received a letter stating that the grinder was overloaded and the warranty was Denied. Well, I guess the overload mechanism they advertise is not part of the warranty. Metabo sent me an estimate to fix of $59.00, plus shipping and handling charges. All together with freight to get it there, repair, and return freight, it cost another $80.00. Total investment in 1 grinder: $260.00. I could have bought almost 3 Dewalt Grinders for the price of One Metabo. Would not recommend and I will be buying Dewalt from now on.

UPDATE 7/8/13: Gave Metabo the go ahead to fix the grinder by faxing back the repair authorization form. Couple of weeks went by, I emailed them to check on it to the included email address. No Response. Then today the grinder showed up in a box completely disassembled in pieces. What a failure of service.

I use these professionally. I have two of these in addition to four other grinders. My Metabo's have failed three times, in just over year, Metabo has denied the warranty every time. I was told I over used them, too much stress causing them to overheat. My other four from two different manufactures don't seem to have that issues. A different failure (remember three total failures) I was told they failed because they had accumulated too much debris inside the grinder. I opened my other grinders (Fein and DeWalt) to clean out any accumulated debris. To my surprise they didn't have any accumulation. To me they seemed to be designed to allow the debris to be expelled.

I noticed that when I hold the Metabo's my hand covers the rear vents, wonder if that contributed to the over heating? The other grinders seem to have avoided this issue by designing their air vents differently. Two of my other grinders, Fein WSG 14-70 E 5-Inch Variable Speed Angle Grinders, also German, are variable speed which allows me a good direct comparison. When I don't need variable speed I use one of two DEWALT D28115 Heavy-Duty 4-1/2-Inch/5-Inch High Performance Grinder with Trigger Grip, at just over $100 they are performing well, consider I use them for my dirtiest jobs (thinking if I burn up a grinder I want to burn up the least expensive grinder). The DeWalt has also designed the air flow to minimize debris accumulation. When I opened it to clean it it was clean.

I just finished a 4 day granite sculpting workshop taught by international artist Jesus Moroles, and he used Metabo grinders exclusively. This variable speed unit worked great from start to finish. It cut, ground, polished and buffed granite without complaint. The only thing I can't attest to is motor life, but it was clear that these units had no trouble from dust clogging or abuse from would be granite artists just trying to get a feel for the material and burning out cutting blades, grinding wheels, and finishing pads in the process. If only the wheel head could be smaller so it would fit in tighter places, but I guess I'll need to find another tool for that.

I bought this to replace another Metabo that I burned out working on stone. This one is tougher and is labeled somewhere as being for stone work. This machine is heavier in weight than then previous grinder, as well as heavier duty. The weight is an issue for me for I need to take breaks because of the weight. But it works extremely well on stone, steel and other metals I use it to cut, grind, and polish. This grinder did not come with the quick release attaching hardware, but I kept the quick release from the other grinder and use it on this one, which works just like it did on the one labeled "quick." The variable speed is essential in working on different materials, and I have another grinder I've had for years, a Bosch, but hardly use it because it is fixed speed. This one is worth the extra cost.

Had to return a Bosch grinder because it burned out, this Metabo grinder has worked perfectly through a lot of granite jobs, very good tool.

Almost no vibration, very smooth stops without jamming and the main reason for the variable speed is you can turn down the rpm till it almost won't spark (which is one of the main reasons I wanted variable speed). Very well built!

By the way I use it for business, and am a welder and millwright.

Much less fatiguing than the Milwaukee it replaces. Nearly vibration free, no motor rpm decrease at low speed under load. Light weight, short body makes it easier to hold, position, and steady. Made me a better metal worker. Great value, fine machine.

For my first time doing granite fabrication and installation, I chose my VS grinder carefully, doing a lot of research. This Metabo won out and was a pleasure to use. Powerful, well-balanced and simple to use, it certainly made my first granite project a pleasure.

I look forward to using it again and again.
