I take L-Methylfolate for Folate Anemia / Folic Acid Anemia. This is the generic version of prescription Deplin with no doctor visit or prescription needed.

I take this product: breakfast, lunch, dinner and in the evening before bed. My Anemia is severe. With this product I get relief. I prefer it over Deplin for the smaller dose per pill, smaller pill size and lower cost. The pills are a gel cap so they dissolve quickly and easily in the stomach. The pills are a size 3 so they are very small.

For more details on what this product does and how it works please see Deplin.com for the prescription version and the Mayo Clinic website for details on Folate/Folic Acid Anemia.

Due to my Iron Anemia and my Folate Anemia I feel cold all the time, exhausted, my mood is unstable where I am prone to Major Depression. I am unresponsive to Anti-depressants since my problem is of a medical nature and not a chemical imbalance like a psychiatrist would treat. I tried psychiatry and it did not help. Once I was put on L-Methylfolate I got better. My energy came up. I was no longer exhausted. My mood improved and I was no longer suicidal or depressed. I got my life back. It has changed my life.

My doctor added GABA to my regimen as he said, "If L-Methylfolate works you also need GABA." The combo of GABA, Amino Acid Complex and L-Methylfolate has brought me back to "normal" and everything is smooth sailing now. Supplements can and do change lives.

If you have a genetic problem, digestive problem or some other problem that causes your body to not hang onto your vitamins, minerals, Electrolytes or Amino Acids it is important to take supplements as food alone will not work. My digestive problems so I can not hold onto my vitamins, minerals and Amino Acids or Electrolytes runs in my family and doctors suspect is a genetic problem.

I have been battling depression since 2003 in a constant cycle of relief but eventual relapse. It final became treatment resistant in 2006. I tried everything from transcranial magnetic stimulation, herbs, amino acids, meds not approved in the U.S. off label meds, meds available only in europe, and nothing had helped. I had tried methylfolate in the past and didn't have much success with it but it was in a tablet form. I then tried this brand and I noticed at first it made me more tired. I then lowered my antidepressant dosage and within 48 hrs I could feel the cloud of depression lifting for the first time in nearly 7 years. It has been a month and so far I haven't had a relapse. To anyone who has treatment resistant depression I highly recommend giving this supplement a try. I take 1 capsule in the morning along with my vitamins.

UPDATE: The last time I ordered this I got a different product. The labels are so similar I didn't even notice until the return window had closed. I still wrangled a partial refund from Amazon, but now I have no 5-MTHF. It now contains calcium salts and some people with parathyroid problems cannot take any calcium. The label is a grayish color instead of the brownish color, but everything else looks identical. Examine carefully when you get it. The seller (Action Development Group) said the formulation had changed. No apologies for not informing me of that and no offer to help in any way.
I give them 0 stars as sellers.
My original review:
Taking methylfolate has made a huge difference in my health. I have energy now and no brain fog. I take three per day, 30 mg.
I got a positive test result for pyroluria and have been using B6 and zinc as well. I addressed my lack of adequate stomach acid. That helped too.
If you have chronic fatigue I recommend this regimen.

Unless a supplement says 'L-methylfolate' on it, do not assume 5-MTHF alone is the biologically active form of folate. The bottle I received was grey and only said '5-MTHF' while the one advertised was pinkish and said '5-MTHF L-Methylfolate.' Checking the back, it did not add up to what was advertised for this product on the Metabolic Maintenance website. This product was '6R, 6S-5-Methylfolate,' 6R is the inactive form and is listed as the first ingredient meaning that this product is not biologically pure. The vendor was very misleading, even referring to the product in the product description as 'l-methylfolate,' when it is clearly not. Methylfolate alone is not the active form unless there is an "L" in front of it. Buyer beware. Both the photo and the description inaccurately describe this product.

I have a history of fatigue related to gluten intolerance. A nutrition doc finally put the pieces together a few years back. Upon reviewing my blood work, he saw that my red blood cells had been showing up as macrocyclic for yrs. So I got Cerefolin prescription initially that helped a lot. Then I realized I could buy the pieces (5 MTHF, NAC & b12) online from good supplement companies like Pure Encapsulations & Thorne Research without the fillers & dyes for a little cheaper. So I have been using that combination with great success for some time.
Recently I saw this brand and was wanting to experiment with a higher dosage of MTHF and this looked like a cost effective way to do it at twice the dose for only a little more than the Thorne Research version. However after I received this, the label indicates it is "Methylfolate (from 26 mg (6R,6S)-5-Methyltetrahydrofolate, calcium salt". The 6R version is NOT the preferred bio active version of 5MTHF from what I have read And it was listed first so is probably the main ingredient. Perhaps this works well for some as it seems to have otherwise good reviews but i will not risk it. Looks like I will be returning to he Thorne Research version.
Fyi--This site ('mthfr dot net' in case Amazon doesn't like the partial link) seemed to have a good summary of the different 5-MTHF forms and names --"mthfr.net/l-methylfolate-methylfolate-5-mthf/2012/04/05/"
