Here is a side-by-side comparison of ten leading magnesium supplements: Innovix Labs Advanced Magnesium, Doctor's Best High Absorption 100% Chelated Magnesium (240 Count), JigSaw Magnesium w/SRT (120 Count), Nutrigold Magnesium Gold, Now Foods Magnesium Citrate (200 mgs), Natural Vitality Natural Calm Raspberry Lemon, Solgar Magnesium Citrate, Life Extension Magnesium Caps, Thorne Research Magnesium Citrate, and Metagenics Mag Glycinate.

INTRODUCTION: Magnesium is needed for more than 300 biochemical reactions in the body. It helps maintain normal muscle and nerve function, keeps heart rhythm steady, supports a healthy immune system, and keeps bones strong. Magnesium also helps regulate blood sugar levels, promotes normal blood pressure, and is known to be involved in energy metabolism and protein synthesis. There is an increased interest in the role of magnesium in preventing and managing disorders such as hypertension, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes.

Magnesium is present in all cells of the body. It is a mineral that is critical for energy production and metabolism, muscle contraction, nerve impulse transmission, and bone mineralization. It helps to regulate calcium transport and absorption. By stimulating the secretion of calcitonin, it aids the influx of calcium into bone and promotes optimal bone mineralization. It has been called nature's calcium channel blocker. The idea refers to magnesium's ability to block calcium from entering muscle and heart cells.

Magnesium is the second most prevalent electrolyte in the body, yet over two-thirds of us get less than the minimum recommended 400 mgs per day. Most of us get about half that much. Note that 400 mgs is just enough to keep us from feeling the major deficiency symptoms.

Me: 57 year old male, 5-6, 170lbs. Slightly below average blood pressure, no diabetes or other health issues.

About 25 years ago, I developed a severe muscle cramp in my right side trapezius (rear of shoulder) muscle. This was not due to any injury, it just started happening. The cramp would occur once every 1 - 2 years, and for no obvious reason. It would be so severe that I would not be able to turn my head without a lot of pain. My self-diagnosis was for muscle pain, take an anti-inflammatory like aspirin or ibuprofen. That took care of most of the pain, and the cramp would go away in about 2 weeks.

I changed health care provider about 2 years ago, and went in for yet another cramping episode. My doctor prescribed Vicodin for the immediate pain, and recommended that I start taking this Metagenics Mag Glycinate 400mg/day. It does have a laxative effect at first (like milk of magnesia), but the body adapts to it. I started taking 100mg/day, and over a 2-week period built up to 400mg/day without any serious side effects. The biggest effect by far though, is that I have not had that muscle pain recur, and, I sleep better at night, and, my GI tract just *feels* better.

I don't think it matters what brand of magnesium supplement one buys, but it needs to be of the highly absorbable type for it to be effective. Also, the "mature 50 year old daily vitamins" I have been taking contain only 50mg of magnesium, and there is no indication that it is highly absorbable.

I did a little research (see footnote 1), and learned that as an omnivorous species most of our magnesium has historically come from dark, leafy vegetables.

This product has been enormously beneficial to my health. A couple of years ago, I had Epstein-Barr virus and also my Restless Leg Syndrome was getting much worse and causing many sleepless nights. So I felt exhausted, achy, tense, and weak most of the time. My doctor found that I was deficient in Magnesium (as many people are), and suggested that I take 2 tablets of Magnesium Glycinate each morning and evening. I had previously tried other brands of Magnesium, but she explained that this brand is highly absorbable, which makes a big difference. Within a month or so, my Restless Leg Syndrome was much less severe and I felt an overall increase in energy and less muscle tension. This made a huge difference in my overall health, mood, and outlook on life. I always took it with food and had no side effects whatsoever. (I think it can cause stomach upset if you take it on an empty stomach, however, so be sure to take it with food).

I had a bone density test and was diagnosed with osteopenia. As a result I began taking a calcium supplement. My doctor told me that magnesium is necessary if the body is to absorb and use calcium, working in conjunction with Vitamin D. She also told me that it has to be a form of calcium that the body can metabolize. This is the formulation she recommended, and she recommended i take at least as much magnesium as i take calcium. I currently take about 1200 mg of each every day. I haven't had a follow-up bone density test yet, but have less joint and muscle pain, which also seems to be related to calcium levels.
