Like the metal clay, the polymer makes wonderful beads and molded shapes.

Like many people, I look forward to new books which deal with Metal Clay and I have been eagerly awaiting the latest offering from the talented Jackie Truty. Unfortunately I am disappointed.

A word of warning as this causes some people a lot of angst, the title is Metal Clay, however it should be Art Clay Silver, as the book only details ACS and not PMC. Personally it does not worry me, as I look to the projects or learning something I did not know etc.

The book is small, compact and excellent in it's design, spiral bound always helps in keeping pages open. With 253 pages it is weighty in its verbiage of this art form, however there is absolutely nothing new in this book that has not already been written, many of the photos have been used before in other publications and as for projects - there are four, 2 easy, 2 hard. That's it.

If you are a beginner with ACS only and you want just one book as your reference then this is an excellent book. If you have been working with ACS for a while, I doubt you would find anything new, except to have a one stop shop with your reference material.

It is a very well written book with excellent references for a beginner , from that perspective it does live up to its title as "The Complete Guide" ( for ACS that is).

How can a writer say her book is a "complete guide" when she excludes the brand of metal clay that was first on the market -- Precious Metal Clay® (PMC) made by Japan's Mitsubishi Materials Corporation? Ah, I see now. The author runs Art Clay® World, USA, Inc, distributing Art Clay®, a metal clay product made by Aida Chemical Industries, Ltd. that entered the US market a few years after PMC®.

That there is no discussion at all about the properties of PMC® places this book squarely at the bottom of my recommendations for metal clay books. Sure, Jackie wants to sell Art Clay® but, at the very least, acknowledge that there is another product on the market.

Yes, the book is spiral-bound so that it lies flat when following her instructions but that's a handy feature only when working one of merely four projects, two of which are categorized as "easy" and two "challenging." For the "easy" projects, you learn how to make a stamped image for bracelet elements and carve a design into a stamp blank or eraser. You also learn how to add patina to a completed project. The "challenging" projects show you how to do low-fire enameling, gemstone inlay, syringe decoration, extrusion, sculpture and use of slip.

If you're interested in learning about metal clay, put your money into any of the less-expensive, and more thorough, metal clay books. For example, Sherri Haab's "The Art of Metal Clay" that includes a DVD is a far better investment.

This is a terrific metal clay techniques reference book. The spiral bound design is great, making it easy to keep it open to whatever page you are working on. It's loaded with tons of great techniques, tips and tricks. Although there are a few projects at the end, it's not really intended as a project book. Rather, it presents instructions and reference for all the various elements of design. Need to know how to make a bail? Want to know how to set a stone? With both a detailed table of contents AND a comprehensive index, it's a snap to find the information you need quickly and easily. I would say this book is an absolute must for any beginner in metal clay!

As an instructor of metal clay, this book will definitely be recommended to my students as a great overall instruction book.
The layout is easy to read and understand and each project has good step-by-step instruction. The book helps everyone from beginner to advanced and is a great reference book.
Art Clay Silver was used in this book because that's the brand Jackie uses, but the instructions are the same, regardless of which brand of clay is used. I feel anyone can learn from this book.
The spriral binding makes it great to keep by your work station to enable following steps without having to worry about the page flipping and it's also a great size for the work area.

Jackie Truty's book is very easy to use. The sprial binding in a hard back edition makes this easy to keep on your work bench for handy reference. Ms Truty has done an excellent job of presenting a complete non-biased overview of precious metal clay properties, techniques and uses. The illustrations are clear and easy to follow. I am both a precious metal clay artisan and instructor and I always recommend this book to all of my beginning students regardless of the precious metal clay product they choose to employ. I think this is the best overall reference book available for beginning students.

Truty's book takes you through the steps, tools, and data needed to begin creating your own art work with metal clay. She gives tips and uses everyday tools that you most likely already own, which, if you are just beginning, will save money while you are exploring this art form.

I was not a fan of her projects and found them to be too ambitious for a beginner. (I've been working with art clay for a while now.) I also didn't like what she made and was not interested in reproducing most of it.

BUT she gives good tips and how to avoid some mistakes. She shows you how to correct some mistakes that you have made already. (I'll be busy.)

It will go in my library of jewelry making books and I will use it as a reference or when I want to try something new. As for it being "the complete guide for metal clay...", if it is not it is very close.
