If you're a PSP owner, then you're no doubt aware that a lot of PSP games are either rush jobs for a quick buck or poorly-done ports of old PS1 games. Developers also want to take a system not designed for handling a lot of polygons and lots of analog action and try to make action games for them...so you'll be pleased to discover that Metal Gear Acid 2 is a game that is made for the limitations of the PSP and works WITH the system to give a sound, fun and solid(us?) gaming experience.

First off, the game eschews long, drawn-out dialogue scenes for long, drawn-out text passages. It seems like bloviating and long-winded proselytizing are trademarks of the MGS line, so adding a fast text skip button gets you into the action quickly. However, there IS some small snippet here or there of dialogue and it breaks things up a bit. I'm glad they chose not to go with full motion polygon movies and speech because they used that saved space very wisely. The game looks..well, gorgeous, with the characters sharp, cel-shaded, loudly-colored and detail all over the place. The art is classic Konami excellence with none of that messy, brush splatter confusion of Ashley Wood anywhere to be seen. You get crisp, cool, cartoony Snake and Friends and it looks marvelous. Anime speed lines, camera cuts and a very decent in-game camera control make this game a treat to play. Also included is a cardboard version of those Magic Eye puzzles where you get a split screen image and the included cardboard box overlay makes it pseudo-3D (you can also use your eyes, if you're good at those Magic Eye things.) This is just a little extra and you don't lose anything by leaving it out. The designers also included a ton of secret cards and the capability to access MGS3 for the PS2 via USB to USB mini cable for photo transfer! The sounds are generic, as is the music, but it fits and doesn't stomp all over the game.

The game itself doesn't rely on quick reflexes so much as it does planning, some strategy and luck (on card draws). The game and manual are no real help for newbies and unless you can find someone else to explain it better, you'll be sort of lost through the first few missions as you learn the game's fine points. I particularly enjoy the turn-based aspect of this game. As I've grown older, I've lost a lot of the ability to play fast reflex games and the PSP, with its small screen, isn't ideally suited for games where a camera angle is the difference between life and death. That's just frustrating (see: MGS:Portable Ops for this problem). This game allows for planning moves and seeing the battlefield; this is something I appreciate. This game seems more fun and relaxing than worrying that the wall you can't see around has 14 guards to ruin your gametime.

This game is interesting, unique and oddball enough with plenty of flair to attract those not really into fast action games. However, it's also a good diversion from the usual PSP fare.

Great game. It implements some interesting twists to the SRPG genre, and still manages to remain relatively faithful to the original MGS series, regarding the stealth element. Gameplay is collectable card related, and there are tons of extra missions, stealth, elimination etc. The 3D visor box-thing is very cool, the movies and gameplay are nice, but its uncomfortable to use. Standard 3D glasses might have been a better choice.

Hell yes, this is a really deep and great game. It has good missions, is very strategic, and has an excellent replayability factor. I must admit that I am one of the few that found the first Ac!d more enjoyable, but this is still a great game. One of my small beefs with the game is that the physics for the female character's breasts are incredibly ludicrous. They jiggle and bounce in a way that is just unnatural. I am a male gamer, but I still find the fact that every woman in video games has to be very "top heavy" and "bouncy" to be a bit sexist and wrong. Other than that though, I think this is a keeper and a game that will entertain you for hours.
