Anybody expecting the usual hollywood experience that is synonymous with Metal Gear Solid is gonna be disappointed. It uses a playing-card system for everything from movement to attacks. If you're a PSP owner, then you're no doubt aware that a lot of PSP games are either rush jobs for a quick buck or poorly-done ports of old PS1 games. Developers also want to take a system not designed for handling a lot of polygons and lots of analog action and try to make action games for them...so you'll be pleased to discover that Metal Gear Acid 2 is a game that is made for the limitations of the PSP and works WITH the system to give a sound, fun and solid(us?) gaming experience.

First off, the game eschews long, drawn-out dialogue scenes for long, drawn-out text passages. It seems like bloviating and long-winded proselytizing are trademarks of the MGS line, so adding a fast text skip button gets you into the action quickly. However, there IS some small snippet here or there of dialogue and it breaks things up a bit. I'm glad they chose not to go with full motion polygon movies and speech because they used that saved space very wisely. The game looks..well, gorgeous, with the characters sharp, cel-shaded, loudly-colored and detail all over the place. The art is classic Konami excellence with none of that messy, brush splatter confusion of Ashley Wood anywhere to be seen. You get crisp, cool, cartoony Snake and Friends and it looks marvelous. Anime speed lines, camera cuts and a very decent in-game camera control make this game a treat to play. Also included is a cardboard version of those Magic Eye puzzles where you get a split screen image and the included cardboard box overlay makes it pseudo-3D (you can also use your eyes, if you're good at those Magic Eye things.) This is just a little extra and you don't lose anything by leaving it out. The designers also included a ton of secret cards and the capability to access MGS3 for the PS2 via USB to USB mini cable for photo transfer! The sounds are generic, as is the music, but it fits and doesn't stomp all over the game.

The game itself doesn't rely on quick reflexes so much as it does planning, some strategy and luck (on card draws). The game and manual are no real help for newbies and unless you can find someone else to explain it better, you'll be sort of lost through the first few missions as you learn the game's fine points. I particularly enjoy the turn-based aspect of this game. As I've grown older, I've lost a lot of the ability to play fast reflex games and the PSP, with its small screen, isn't ideally suited for games where a camera angle is the difference between life and death. That's just frustrating (see: MGS:Portable Ops for this problem). This game allows for planning moves and seeing the battlefield; this is something I appreciate. This game seems more fun and relaxing than worrying that the wall you can't see around has 14 guards to ruin your gametime.

This game is interesting, unique and oddball enough with plenty of flair to attract those not really into fast action games. However, it's also a good diversion from the usual PSP fare.

I highly recommend this!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent and innovative SRPG, January 16, 2008
= Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Metal Gear Acid 2 (Video Game)
Great game. It implements some interesting twists to the SRPG genre, and still manages to remain relatively faithful to the original MGS series, regarding the stealth element. Gameplay is collectable card related, and there are tons of extra missions, stealth, elimination etc. The 3D visor box-thing is very cool, the movies and gameplay are nice, but its uncomfortable to use. Standard 3D glasses might have been a better choice.

4.0 out of 5 stars Take the Ac!d Trip, June 7, 2007

Hell yes, this is a really deep and great game. It has good missions, is very strategic, and has an excellent replayability factor. I must admit that I am one of the few that found the first Ac!d more enjoyable, but this is still a great game. One of my small beefs with the game is that the physics for the female character's breasts are incredibly ludicrous. They jiggle and bounce in a way that is just unnatural. I am a male gamer, but I still find the fact that every woman in video games has to be very "top heavy" and "bouncy" to be a bit sexist and wrong. Other than that though, I think this is a keeper and a game that will entertain you for hours.

The game is very good, it's not for everyone but if you like the thinking games and the inherent random nature of card games you will enjoy it.

Anybody expecting the usual hollywood experience that is synonymous with Metal Gear Solid is gonna be disappointed. It uses a playing-card system for everything from movement to attacks. You get cards that have specific actions on them and then you use those cards to perform the action it specifies. It's very different but it is by no means bad. It can be very addicting and is perfectly suited for on the go gaming where you might only have a couple minutes to play then have to put it away for a bit. I have not finished the game but from about 3 or 4 hours in I would probably only have paid like 15 dollars max for this when it first came out. Now is the time to pick it up if it interests you in any way.

5.0 out of 5 stars It grows on you, May 18, 2010
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Metal Gear Acid 2 (Video Game)
This game is pretty deep than average games. I finished the game on normal, finishing every level regardless what grade I get. I didn't find it challenging, just want to finish the game and see the ending. Then I start on extreme mode, it was impossible to me at first, I cannot even finish the first level, the problem is I save the game already on top of the original save. If I start again, I will loss all my card collection. So I tried different methods, and I finish one level at a time with so many tries on some of them. The most memorized level is the last level "escape route". I thought it is a walk in the park. However, it was the deepest for me in all levels. I learned the true essence of this game on the last level on extreme mode. What a game! I am going back playing all extra scenario on every level and try get S rank on all levels in easy mode, and then work my way up on different difficult level. I have been playing games for over 20 years. This is the first review I give because it is a damn good game!

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect game for a handheld., April 8, 2010

This review is from: Metal Gear Acid 2 (Video Game)
I've owned a PSP since it came out. Many of the action games that I play on it just didn't seem like a good fit. I heard about Metal Gear Ac!d being a turn based card game. I had not ever played a Strategy RPG or a card based game before, but picked up Metal Gear Ac!d 2 and decided to give it a try. At first the learning curve alienated me, but after spending a lot of time with the game during my daily commute, I've come to fall in love with the strategy, gameplay, art design, and card collecting aspects of the game. The only real fantasy card game I ever played was Magic the Gathering and MGA2 taps into the same crazy deck building obsession that I knew with Magic, except when combined with the strategic aspects of line-of-sight, character positioning, and cost management; this game just blows me away.

Graphics are great for the PSP. Colors are bright and the 3d is elegant and simple with no muddy 3D like some games have. The game is cheeky with silly humor sometimes. Case in point: ludicrous bouncy-breast physics on 2 of the female characters with silly camera pans to match, and silly video introductions of the new card packs, but these are points in the game's favor. Some of the multi-part missions seem to drag on a bit too long and the save system needs some work (no auto save, just manual saving during intermission). Loading and using equipped weapons took me forever to figure out as did getting the card ID numbers to show up. Deck building interface needs a better method of sorting the cards, would be nice if you could sort cards like you can the cars in Forza or Gran Turismo.

When you add it up, the few criticisms are negated by a great game designed from the ground up to play beautifully on the PSP. My favorite game on the system and a must-buy for anyone who might enjoy card based games or turn based strategy. Ignore the bad reviews from the couple immature MGS4 fanboys, I guess their daddies never sat down to play checkers with them when they were little.

If you can get past the fact that its turn based and card based its an awesome fun game. People expecting this Metal Gear game to be an exhilirating real time action game, like most Metal Gear games, should look elsewehere because this game certainly is not one of them. If you on the other hand want a new kind of Metal Gear game you should certainly buy this game, you won't regret it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Metal Gear Strategy Made Sublime, October 16, 2009
= Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Metal Gear Acid 2 (Video Game)
I'm a huge Metal Gear fan -- having played/beaten all the console MGS games. I'm also big into tactical strategy, so the first Acid sounded right up my alley. It turned out to be too constricting with too obscure a story to hold my interest.

Metal Gear Acid 2, on the other hand, delivered on all fronts. Its gameplay is amazing, really breaking down what works in this series to fit into turn-based confines. The card-centric gameplay, which I'm not normally a fan of, works well here. You can adjust your deck, and there are tons of very useful and strategic cards to choose from. Balancing a deck takes the perfect amount of time and thought. It's even got side modes for quick action sequences when you complete the main story.

Graphically, it surprised me. The 3D gimmick is just that, and I didn't use it beyond a few minutes to merely check it out. The sound may disappoint people expecting parallels to the console games, but it's not a fair comparison.

Once I finished the game, I immediately started up again -- just so I could use my same deck and build it up further. Rarely do I ever play a game twice in a row -- much less all the way through a second time. It speaks volumes for my impression on this game. Metal Gear Acid 2 is the best portable Metal Gear game, in my opinion, but is also so much more. It's also unique and not a port -- which you don't find too easily on PSP. I highly recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Strategy based RPG for Snake? Fans of MSG might welcome the new style., September 8, 2009
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars

This review is from: Metal Gear Acid 2 (Video Game)
Here's a different side of Snake we haven't seen yet. Alright, with all the clones of Snake running around the MGS world. And when you've played through the Metal Gear Solid series... at some point, you might be cynical of the people walking in the street and the man standing behind you, who might just be wearing face camo. *pause*

Metal Gear Ac!d 2 brings the tactical espionage hero of the series, Snake, albeit in a different manner ... since the Metal Gear Ac!d series most assuredly does not involve Naked Snake (Big Boss), Liquid Snake, or Solid Snake (don't even try Solidus Snake). With that said, this is a whole different and new Snake sent off into a mission to shutdown an underground terrorist organization but more importantly, another brand new mechanical mammoth, Metal Gear. A brand new story that needs no predecessor or successor to tell of its excellence and uniqueness in story, the game while strategy-based may not cater to every MGS fan -- if taken in another light, Metal Gear Ac!d 2 delivers a rich and interesting battlefield mode, a card system that is built to help you maneuver through the terrain.. whether its from under a steel water pipe or on a bridge, looking to shoot down a machine or enemy soldier from across. Like all MGS games, they immerse you into their world and point you past the level of James Bond .. into the level of a much cruder yet [...] soldier that Snake is.

Step out of the box for a moment and check this game out, you might like what you find.
