3.0 out of 5 stars Well worth it
Playing the game was fun. Only problem for me is that I like to always be in control and alot of the game your watching the Movie aspect of the game, instead of having control of the game yourself, but overall the game was worth buying.

I have to agree with The Rev on his review. I think most of the people that wrote anything just babbled on about the killing and what not. I for one watched, listened, and read every word to that game. They were trying to take the story much deeper than just the upfront missions. I am glad someone else got the message too. To get the full experience you have to actually watch all the cinematics and pay attention. I know alot of people just skip through them in games because they can get lengthy. Quite often you can predict what they are going to show or say, but I was suprised with this game. Take the time to watch them and there is alot of humor in this game as well. Some of it is just not always shoved in your face, you have to search and play around some. Josh

5.0 out of 5 stars Movie that thinks it's a game, or vice versa?, May 26, 2006
= Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Metal Gear Solid 3 with DVD (Video Game)
First, I want to make it really clear that I definitely enjoy this game, despite the 4 star fun rating and the title of this review. I decided to give the game a try given all the recent fervor surrounding the PS3 demos of MGS4. In the span of about three days, I went from scratching my head over the drawn-out cinematics and often silly script writing/translation to being fairly addicted to this particular MGS game's blend of 'traditional' Solid-Snake action (compare to MGS 1 & 2) and the all-new jungle warfare, Snake-Eater's claim to fame. Once I was familiar with the at times over-responsive controls (an understanding of the touch-sensitive capabilities of the PS2's dual-shock controller is a must), crawling through the underbrush to toss a venomous snake at an unsuspecting foe, or swapping camo when it starts raining became highly addictive. Ultimately the game's slightly more tounge-in-cheek style (when compared to MGS2) is hit or miss, as are the plentiful cutscenes through which the story is told. This installment shares Kojima's penchant for overly drawn-out storytelling, and I often found myself wishing they would just get on with it so I could get back to the great gameplay. That being said, the story as a whole really is pretty decent, especially when compared to MGS2's dumbfounding conclusion, and I found it enjoyable discoving how Snake-Eater fits into the whole 'Metal Gear' mythos. This game gets even easier to reccomend with the release of the loaded "Subsistance" version, with all new game dynamics and expanded single and multiplayer content.

5.0 out of 5 stars To Russia With Love, May 10, 2006
By
Jeff Lee "JL" (Orange County, CA) - See all my reviews
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Metal Gear Solid 3 with DVD (Video Game)
Hideo Kojima's third installment of his critically acclaimed "Metal Gear: Solid" series doesn't exactly transcend the expectations of gamers, but manages to meet them in full force. From the beginning of the game, the story takes off. We are shown a short clip of Raiden from the second game ("Sons of Liberty") jumping from a helicopter, and a bit of fear sets in until "Raiden" unmasks himself only to show the mug of the man who has graced "World's Biggest Badass" lists of many fanboys, Solid Snake. From here the story begins, a conflict between two nations following the second World War reaching its climax in wake of the discovery and development of a moving tank that can launch nuclear warheads. The Russians have their hands on the creator of the weapon, and it is your mission to see that the scientist is returned to safety. The story takes its inevitable plot turns, and you'll find yourself immersed into it, (save a few absurdities, such as the President of the United States speaking directly over the phone to Soviet Leader Nikita Khrushchev) aided by the gritty addition of the survival element, where the protagonist will gather food, treat wounds, and attempt to stay unseen while carrying out his objective.

The gameplay is almost an afterthought, but in a good sense. You will very rarely find yourself in a difficult situation with controls and playability, and this seamlessness helps the player to enjoy the story all the better. The addition of a new Close Quartered Combat (CQC) system introduces some new aspects of incapacitation. Aside from that, it is mostly the Metal Gear Solid that we have come to expect and love from one of the most influential and ingenius video game producers of all time.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the greatest games ever, March 30, 2006
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Metal Gear Solid 3 with DVD (Video Game)
In Metal Gear Solid three we see a U.S. spy dropped into the Russian forest in order to save a rocket scientist that wants to defect to the U.S. during the Cold War. This is by far one of the greatest games ever made when it come to all aspects of game making. Whether it be the astounding graphics, the superb narrative, or the expertly written story that contains many scenes that will conjure up emotions like no other game has before. MGS3 contains many game play improvements over the previous MGSs and will keep you on the edge of you seat with some of the most intense action ever seen on a game console, I give it my highest recommendation and suggest that anyone with a PS2 should pick this up right away. It is amazing.

sure it is a new aspect to the MGS genre... but it takes place before the other metal gear solid games... back in the 60's when the cold war began and the use of "spies" were being used...

this game really gets you thinking about your surroundings, and your effectiveness in survival and combat training.

the controls of the game are a little different at first but they are very easy to master and to execute some of the CQC(close quarter combat) moves.

i would definitely recommend this game... but seeing how metal gear solid subsistence is now out... your better off buying MGS:S if you want more content then the original. More content in online play and new scenes and a library of cinematic and future metal gear games.

5.0 out of 5 stars Jaw-droppingly good, June 26, 2005
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Metal Gear Solid 3 with DVD (Video Game)
This is one of my favorite games of all time. I have been a metal gear solid fan since the first 'solid' game on the ps1, even when I was just watching someone play it! This game takes all the good parts of the past games, adds new stuff, and gets rid of all the annoying parts. First, the story isn't nearly as convoluted as in the past. No warring covert factions that might be the same one or whatever. However, you still need to pay attention, as there are a few surprising twists near the end,but no real head-scratchers for anyone whose IQ is higher than that of 2-ply toilet paper. The cutscenes are still very long, but ridiculously well-directed and genuinely fun to watch. Also, there are times (in the cutscenes) the game will tell you to push R1, and if you're fast enough, you can see something hidden, surprising, or just plain fun to look at. (I'll say this: it involves a woman and a surprise look at something fun)
Also, the gameplay has been revamped. You must decide what camo pattern will hide you the best, hunt your food, and you can even blow up enemy storehouses to weaken their weapons, or make them less aggressive from hunger. There is a boss fight can easily take over an hour. (The End is his name. Small hint: Keep moving. Don't stay in one spot for too long.) Close-quarters combat with the knife is just amazing and really tests your controller-wielding skills. The music, especially the main theme, is just amazing, and will blow you away. Some people have been complaining that, at at least 24 hours, the game is too long, but they don't know what they're talking about. REAL gamers WANT their games to be long. Spendng $50 on a game that you can beat in 2 days is just ridiculous, especially for us teenagers that don't have jobs and need to wait a while to get ahold of that money. Here's the bottom line: (took long enough to get to the end, right?) This is one of the best games I have ever played. You don't just play it. You EXPERIENCE it. Do yourself a favor and buy this game. Now. What are you doing? Go buy it, right this second! Sorry this review was so long. (Hint: Once you get a cardboard box, get in it and call your equipment guy on your radio. (the black guy whose name I can't remember.) You'll hear a funny conversation that fans of the Metal Gear Solid series will definitely understand.)

5.0 out of 5 stars Naked Snake! CQC - Close Quarter Combat Advanced A+, November 7, 2005
By
OverTheMoon (overthemoonreview@hotmail.com) - See all my reviews
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Metal Gear Solid 3 with DVD (Video Game)
To think I almost gave this 1 star! "Metal Gear Solid 1" October 1998 designed to save the Playstation1 from the Ninento64 "Golden Eye" (released in September 1997) was a new type of `cinematics' game that the N64 cartridge could not do (playback of movie scenes on a disc is "MGS1"), MGS1 is about 4 stars at best or five if you really thought it was the bee's knees, maybe the preferred "Golden Eye" for 5 star treatment. Playstation2 hype, Christmas 2001 "MGS2: Sons of Liberty", created a big five star stomping fan base (see the reviews), but most of us could see how phoney "MGS2" was. I gave "MGS2: Sons of Liberty" 3 stars back then (maybe much less now considering), boring cinematics and constant in-game radio stops made it horribly annoying; flat game play often simply unplayable out of restriction. Quite limited in movement considering the excitement, the character of Raiden was also not Solid Snake either. The oil tanker was cool as a map for the first hour but not the whole game! In 2005 I played "MGS3" for thirty minutes and boxed it shaking my head. I went back to it again for another attempt last week. Let me explain. All is forgiven... and then more some.

"MGS3: Snake Eater" is a Solid Five star game, the best MGS experience besides not even being MGS at all at times (this is why it is better), maybe as good as the experience of playing "Half-life 2" till the end, I am not a MGS fan (still not; skipped `MGS2.5: Substance' totally) but I played this like it was the best thing since "GTA: San Andreas" or slice bread. The video cut-scenes are the finest on the PS2 yet (or any game for that matter; some elements are PS2 rendered; wear the zombie mask camouflage for best cut-scene effect!), "MGS2" had great graphics, but MGS3 is all about the all-too-very real jungle and wildlife around you (Yes PS2 graphics are nothing compared to a PC ATI 256mb pro card, but Snake Eater lives!) LISTEN NEXT - William Ewart Fairbairn, General List, was born February 28, 1885 in Rickmansworth, Herts, England. Prior to the Second World War, Fairbairn was the Chief Instructor at the Shanghai Municipal Police from October 1907 to March 1940. Fairbairn joined SOE in March 1942 with the rank of Captain, having previously been an instructor at the War Office Special Training Centre in Scotland in July of 1940. He founded CQC (see review title). CQC is employed in MGS3 as a means to effectively fight and ground the enemy with Judo type throws and holds and "Tenchu" style executions, use him as a human shield or interrogate the enemy for mission information (yes you heard right), you can also select several types of camouflage (play `Barbie' every other new area you explore, but still come out feeling more like a man) MGS3 has the most realistic jungle terrain accomplished in a game since "Far Cry", as you crawl your way very slowly through miles of Russian woodland for a few days (literally), also hunting the wildlife to feed yourself and a self-administered x-ray medical scan system that allows you to select treat various wounds with different medic tools, I came out the other side of this EPIC INSTANT CLASSIC thinking that there is a future revolution in gaming waiting to happen as a result of Solid Snake, you should support this game! Why? Solid Snake gets you doing things in the jungle that you have never done before in a `game'. At one stage I could see my own vomit on infrared because of a bad animal I killed and ate. This hot zone gave me away to a sniper called `The End' who eradicated me because of it. Towards the end of the game things get more urban. I hope MGS4 is in Tokyo City but just like the jungle here! I find the following most logical. You must find your own way but - see map, camouflage gear (check halfway through map again), first-person quick look, infrared look, sonar ping, crawl, kill rat food, ping again, crawl slowly to bad guy, CQC grab (Choose CQC mode), interrogate, kill, CQC ground smash three other enemies there and then, hide in bushes, set TNT, crawl away, detonate if bad guys come, eat hunted food, try CQC three more enemy, accidentally fail with CQC on one who alerts six other enemy, take them out with up to twenty weapons of various types or CQC them all, blend into the jungle and run away, the choice is yours until you get to the other end of the map where a video will play and although the story is ten times better than MGS2, it is still Japanese, so these things will always remain illogical to us Westerners, still works better than most PS2 attempts, at times Manga quality, this is one of the most memorable games I have played in my lifetime.

Set game to `easy' and learn CQC before weapon's culture. Use your sonar, map and equipment and play the game SLOWLY (not GTA madness!) as in crawl for miles and miles in the right frame of mind and you will appreciate how significant things really are. I just hope that we see MGS3 PC with huge MULTIPLAYER jungles for many players! Get that going and it will 0WN MY BROADBAND! Developers, do you hear? Take note.

Pros:
- The first true stealth game you will ever play.
- Likely the last true stealth game you will play in 2005 until MG4... maybe.
- CQC.
- Russian Jungle
- Can actually take on HL2 and Halo 2.

Cons:
- HIGHEST PS2 LEARNING CURVE. Takes hours to break in properly. Intro does not appear until a few hours.
- Does not last forever.

5.0 out of 5 stars It's not a game, it's an experience!, December 4, 2004

This review is from: Metal Gear Solid 3 with DVD (Video Game)
This is without a doubt THE BEST game ever created! The story is as gripping as the other adventures, the gameplay is out of this world, and the graphics are mezmorizing! This is the pinacle of what future games should hope to achieve. It's simple to play with an oppertunity to play even deeper. Once you watch the first cut-scene, you won't put down the controller! A serious buy for any spy-theorist out there! Don't waiste any time, buy it now!

5.0 out of 5 stars SNAKE EATER, March 13, 2006
A Kid's Review
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Metal Gear Solid 3 with DVD (Video Game)
MGS3:Snake Eater is the secons best MGS game to the expansion version:SubSistence.
in MGS3 you play a younger Big Boss-who at the time is called Naked Snake is sent to some Russian jungles and mountains to resque rocket scientist Sokolov from col.Volgin and his GRU from being forced to labour on a top-secret weapon called the ShagoHod-a Nuclear supertank that is likely to attack USA even from USSR homeland-as Naked Snake he must resque Sokolov and demolish the Hod-But like all Metal Gear games it has twists and plot turns and may not turn out the way Snake plans to.
Since Snake is operating in a Jungle and his mission will last a couple of days(which it does) and his also in Soviet territory which means Hostile ground he has to survive.Survival is the core of the game his "stamina" runs out and he needs to eat-He has to eats anything edible like snakes, rats, goats, crocodiles,Honey and fish There are some human-made food like Calorie Mates(WTF are they?),Russian rations, and tasty instant noodles. If Snake like a food it will benefit his stamina more,if he didlikes a food it won`t fill in any serious gaps of stamina.
There is a new combat system in MGS3 called CQC which can get Snake out of trouble when guards are ganging up on him or if he wants to make a silent but deadly stealth attack.
The CQC knife is the core of using any CQC even if its just a KO bash.
Camoflage was one of the most hyped features about the game you can download it aswell-what it basiacally does is conceal Snake when he is in a certain uniform-There is even special uniforms with spec. powers like the ones Snake earns from Bosses(Not lethally killing them)
that have the power to turn Snake 80% invisable etc.

MGS is THE best stealth series out.Hitman comes 2nd and Splinter Cell just plain SUX.
stupid XBox fanboys
HALO is crapp justa typical sci-fi shooter, yet they think its special.PS2 was a bigger success than both XBox and GC combined.
MGS is better than HALO,Splinter Cell, and GCs Metroid Prime!
GUDBYE
