4.0 out of 5 stars somewhat acquired taste..., July 13, 2007
This review is from: Metal Gear Solid: Sons Of Liberty Volume 1 (v. 1) (Paperback)
First off, whoever wrote the review below this needs to research their comic artists or at least read the credits in the beginning of comics. Ashley Wood is a guy and Arthur Suydam only does the COVERS for all the Marvel Zombie shiz, NOT the inside art for anything.

Anways, Ashley Wood's art in general is somewhat of an acquired taste, it used to almost bug me with the chaoticness of his paintings and drawings, but it certainly fits the mood for most of the source material. He's recreated the brilliant "sketchy" art that was seen in MGS for the original Playstation system. It may seem jagged and little odd but trust me, their are much much much worst artists than this awesome dude. Its refreshing seeing comics finished in a completely different style from the normal "mmkay im going to draw it in pencil, then you are gonna do pen & inks over it, and then some other guy is gonna color it..." *snore*

Id probably start from the first game's graphic novel also done by Ashley Wood and Alex Garner because it might not make a whole lot of sense at times if you're just getting into the series. Great art, great game-to-comics adaptation, extremely faithful to the source.

Id recommend HellSpawn: The Ashley Wood Collection TPB for people that havent seen much of Mr.Wood's style.

3.0 out of 5 stars Stick to Marvel, June 21, 2007
This review is from: Metal Gear Solid: Sons Of Liberty Volume 1 (v. 1) (Paperback)
First of all, the art. I'm sure Ashley Wood spent the check she/he got before realizing "Oh [...]! I got 5 days to turn in a complete book!". They might as well have used ink blots set to words. That's how the art looks. I know that MGS has a lot of sketchy art, but she just takes it to a whole new, ugly, level. Most, if not all, the art looks like rushed figure drawings done in charcoal. By the 40th page, I had enough. I was confused and my eyes were bleeding. After a while of collecting dust I had the decency to turn to the final pages and saw some of the extra art work she/he possibly turned in to get the job. It was good. Well, some of it.
As for the story, I never finished it. My advice, go pick up "Marvel Zombies". It has a great story, a few laughs, and AWESOME art by Suydam.
Don't buy this if you buy comics or graphic novels for the art. Spend your money on the Street Fighter comics. Trust me, it's worth it.
Final thoughts. Ashley Wood, years of figure drawing classes gone to waste.
