5.0 out of 5 stars Metal Gear Solid VR Missions, an excellent game.
For those that have already played Metal Gear Solid shouldn't have to even think twice about purchasing this amazing game! 3.0 out of 5 stars Not worth the buy, rent it twice
This game has all of the great weapons and game control of its predecessor (Metal Gear Solid), but it's only VR mission after VR mission. Quick, shoot at targets, now soldiers, and back again. The few variations they include are short lived and not worth spending full price. My recommendation is rent it twice from your five day rental video store and be happy you...

4.0 out of 5 stars For those who thirst for more Metal Gear action, December 31, 1999

In fact, I'd really only recommend this to those people who really enjoyed the gameplay and challenge of Metal Gear Solid. As I understand this, this disk was part of the game that was cut and then re-released in Japan as Metal Gear Solid Integral, as a VR Disk packaged with the game.

So as is, here in the states, we get a disk with just the added VR levels. I have to say, I did enjoy some parts of this release very much, though there were several points where I was let down. This game takes place pretty much exclusively in the VR environs seen in Metal Gear Solid, and doesn't include any of the storyline, speech or backdrop that helped to make MGS a great game. Playing as the Ninja is great, though there are only 3 levels to play him in. The mystery mode can be somewhat fun, though I don't see much replay value in it.

So all in all, don't buy this game unless you really loved MGS for it's gameplay and you want a chance to recieve some additional training with the Stinger and Nikita and SOCOM and PSEG and all the rest. I'm very much a MGS enthusiest, so it was great for me. If you aren't, think twice.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great add-on to Metal Gear: Solid!, March 13, 2001
This review is from: Metal Gear Solid: VR Missions (Video Game)
This game doesn't have a story... But that is actually a good thing! VR Missions is great for those of us who have to wedge game playing between an ever-changing schedule. Most levels take anywhere from 30 seconds to five mintues... and you can exit anytime and save your game. So, if you have to get up and run... you really haven't lost anything if you take ten seconds to exit and save.

It has all the classic moves from MGS, and some fun levels like "Mystery" (arrest the right murder suspect), Puzzle (think enemy-dominos) and round after round of weapon-based combat (so you don't ALWAYS have to sneak around).

I'd say pick this one up, with a ten-dollar price tag, there isn't much of a reason not to!

300 VR Missions may seem a bit daunting at first glance, but when you're dying for more Metal Gear Solid action and completing the original game for the ninth time doesn't appeal much to you this weekend, you don't pass up a chance like this. Experience with Metal Gear Solid isn't necessary, but definitely recommended, there are a few elements from it that a player would be better off with when going into VR Missions. The Ninja levels are particularly sharp, but there are only three very short ones to choose from, so they get old fast. The photo shoots aren't much of an incentive at all, especially during some of the more frustrating missions. If anything, do it for personal pride, but by all means, do it.

The main reason why I can't give this game a rating of 5 stars...well it ain't no MGSolid, but in a way that's what makes this game particularly enjoyable! it's just pure, mindless, addictive fun where you sneak around shooting things under certain time conditions w/out having to sit through the sometimes endless dialogue of the original game. besides, if you stick it out long enough you get to fight a 50ft soldier that's hellbent on stepping on Meryl(from the first game)! and in my opinion, that's way cooler than playing as a masochistic ninja any day. so go get it, what else are you gonna do at 4am?

Upon completion of Metal Gear Solid last Christmas '98, I was looking forward to Komani's next offering in the genre, VR Missions. I rushed out and bought it. I wish I had read the valuable reviews here first, I was very disappointed. This game, if you can call it that, is just taking advantage of the success of its predocessor, Metal Gear Solid. I did not have fun with it and it was not challenging. The operation of weapons are limited and do not allow for traditional aiming as in Metal Gear, rather a laser scope dresses it up a bit, but does not give you freedom to be efficient in tactics or battle. I would rather see Konami do something original rather than produce reconstituted practice missions.

4.0 out of 5 stars VR Training, July 7, 2008
= Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Metal Gear Solid: VR Missions (Video Game)
In 1998, Hideo Kojima single handedly changed the scope of gaming with one game: Metal Gear Solid. Within Metal Gear Solid, there were ten VR Missions. Surprisingly, people spent a lot of time with these VR missions, trying to clear them as fast as possible and honing their skills. When word of this got out, Konami developed Metal Gear Solid: VR Missions. A game that consisted of nothing but VR missions for the gamers that wanted them.

If anyone expected any story out of VR Missions, you'd probably wonder what they were thinking, because VR Missions doesn't have a story. The game is exactly what it says it is: VR Missions. Metal Gear Solid VR Missions consist of over 150 missions. At first you can only do very basic missions, including the same ten that were included in Metal Gear Solid. As well as training with weapons. The more missions you complete, the more that will open up, including missions that can get into the bizarre, like fighting a giant soldier and super soldiers.

In terms of variety, Metal Gear Solid VR Missions does a great job. There are so many different varied missions here to keep you busy. You'll also be able to unlock the Ninja and a couple of other secrets, although, none of these things is very lucrative. While it's great to play as the Ninja, the controls are a little sloppy, and there are only three incredibly short missions. As I said, however, there are a ton of VR Missions here to keep you busy for a long time.

Visually, VR Missions is on par with the original Metal Gear Solid, the only real problem being that they didn't opt to create more different looking levels. So much of the stages look fairly generic, save for a few missions where you'll find yourself in some familiar looking areas from Metal Gear Solid. You can only stare at virtual space for so long. Much of the music sounds very good though. While the soundtrack isn't exactly huge, it plays a good part in letting the player know that through and through this is not an action game. It is definitely a puzzle game.

There are two things about Metal Gear Solid VR Missions that can cause some alarm, though. The first being that many missions are fairly short, meaning that this game only really serves as an expansion of Metal Gear Solid. It's a mystery why Konami didn't just start packing it in with the original game after a while. It never really happened. The second huge problem is that the game advertises that it has 300 missions. What they don't mention is that many of those missions are the same. You'll undergo one mission and then be expected to do it again in a Time Attack. To the developers this serves as two different missions, but it's the same mission. The only difference is that you'll be doing it with an additional challenge.

As a puzzle game, Metal Gear Solid VR Missions is fantastic. It gets repetitive having to do some of the same missions over and over, and it may only really just be an expansion of one of the bonuses in Metal Gear Solid, but it still serves as a fantastic game for those who crave to do more VR Missions.

The only thing that will put you down is that you have to re-play all the VR training levels from Metal Gear Solid. After that, it's all level ground. So many different levels and types of training. MGS:VRM's replay value is very poor, because you've done all of this. What get's even worse is that (since it is training) if ANYONE OR ANYTHING spots you, you have to do that level ALL OVER AGAIN. That's get's annoying because in MGS you just have to outrun or kill guards if you're spotted. I agree that this should have been a pre-release. But it didn't. So put your army boots on and blast off into VR MGS training.

The game is great, if you like the traning missions in the original Metal Gear Solid. However, if you haven't bought the original and by ANY! chance have the ability to play Japanese imports, you are MUCH better off buying Metal Gear Solid Integral (Japanese). It has BOTH the original game and V.R. Missions AND the voices are in English. Just be sure you have the ability to play Japanese games.
